Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has opened up about the infamous ‘slapgate’ incident involving S Sreesanth during the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. In the fiery altercation, Harbhajan Singh, who was playing for the Mumbai Indians, slapped the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) fast bowler Sreesanth after a league match in the IPL 2008.
The heated moment has led to Harbhajan’s suspension for the remainder of the tournament by the BCCI. Now, Harbhajan has called the incident one of his biggest regrets. Speaking in a candid interaction with Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube show, the former spinner admitted that if he could erase one moment from his life, it would be the ‘slapgate’ incident.

Despite several apologies over the years, the former World Cup winner has confessed that the incident still hurts him, and he really feels bad about what he did back in 2008. Harbhajan admitted that the situation never should have escalated to that level and accepted his mistake.
Even though tempers flared and emotions took over in that IPL match, Harbhajan stressed that such behavior had no place in the game, no matter how much you are provoked. Over the years, the former Indian off-spinner has apologized again and again both on and off the field, but the incident remains a stain on his decorated career.

Meanwhile, Harbhajan also shared an emotional moment that deeply affected him years after the infamous IPL slap incident with S Sreesanth. He recalled how meeting Sreesanth’s daughter left him shattered when she refused to talk to him because of what happened with her father.
Harbhajan Singh told Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel, “What hurt me even after many years was when I met his daughter and I was talking to her with a lot of love, and she said, ‘I don’t want to talk to you. You hit my father.’ My heart was shattered, and I was on the verge of tears. I was asking myself, what is the impression I’ve left on her? She must be thinking of me in a poor light, right? She sees me as the guy who hit her father. I felt so bad.”

The incident made Harbhajan reflect on how he is remembered by those close to Sreesanth, especially his daughter, who sees him as the person who hurt her dad. He expressed deep regret and said he still wishes to make things right and hopes that one day, she won’t see him in the same negative light, and this is the reason he wants to erase that moment from his life forever.
Harbhajan signed off by saying, “I still apologize to his daughter that I can’t do anything. I keep telling her, ‘But if there’s anything I can do to make you feel better and make you think I’m not that kind of person, please tell me.’ I wish when she grows up, she doesn’t see me in the same light. And think her uncle will always be with her and extend any kind of support he can. That’s why I want to remove that chapter.”
