PAK vs AUS: "It Doesn't Happen To..." - Justin Langer Hopeful Of David Warner Getting 'Fairytale Finish'
David Warner has announced his retirement from Test cricket and he will play his farewell Test at his home ground in Sydney. Former Australia head coach Justin Langer feels that Warner is lucky as there are very few players who get to retire on their terms. He also wishes that every cricketer who retires gets a fairytale ending to his career.
David Warner announced back in June during the Ashes that he wants his Test career to end in Sydney against Pakistan in January 2024. The southpaw has been a first-choice opener for Australia since his debut in 2011. He will end his Test career, being the fifth-highest run-getter for Australia in Tests. David Warner will end his career with more than 8500 runs with an average touching 45 and a lot of memories to his name.
While recalling his retirement in 2007, Justin Langer said that it was disappointing for him but he hopes that David Warner gets a ton on his last match against Pakistan. He at least wants Warner to finish his career with a win for Australia.
Justin Langer Wants David Warner To End His Career With A Win
“It’s so hard to let go. I’d had a career with lots of ups and downs that finished with a fairytale. I’m sure that’s what everyone would like to see for Davey as well, or anyone who retires frankly, but it doesn’t happen to many people. So if Davey can go out with a hundred or even a (three-nil) series win against Pakistan, that would be a nice way for him to finish. Very, very, very few sportspeople get to go out with a fairytale finish.”
Justin Langer also added that players go into resentment for not finishing well, The veteran added, “A lot of sports people and coaches always have a bit of a chip on their shoulder because very, very few get to go out on their own terms. You’re either dropped, or you get injured, or you’re sacked so there’s always a bit of resentment.”
David Warner started his farewell Test series with a bang when he scored a brilliant 164 off 211 deliveries in the first innings of the first Test in Perth. However, he was out for a duck in the second innings and then in the second Test at the MCG, he scored 38 in the first innings and got out on a meager six in the second innings. He would also be hoping to get a century in his final red-ball match and no better opponent than Pakistan to do so as he has registered a triple hundred against them in the past.
Australia have already won the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead against Pakistan in the series. Pakistan has not won a Test match in Australia since 1995 and they would be hoping to end this 29-year-old jinx in Sydney. However, Australia will not give any opportunity to Pakistan as they want to maintain a good PCT in the WTC Cycle. Currently, Australia stands third on the WTC points table whereas Pakistan stands fifth. Only New Zealand and South Africa are ahead of the reigning WTC champions in the WTC Points Table.
