Former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali visibly broke down in tears after Rohit Sharma's team India defeated Pakistan by 5 runs yesterday in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The arch-rivals met each other at the Nassau County Stadium in New York in what was both team's 2nd group-stage match of the T20 World Cup. Thanks to the win, India are now just another win away from securing Super 8 qualification while Pakistan might have to wait a while before knowing their scenario.
Pakistan's Super 8 qualification scenario
All of it currently depends on the results they earn from their remaining group matches against Canada and Ireland. Babar Azam and co. must do everything possible to grab all 4 points and then hope for the Indian team as well as the Irish team to beat the USA. If that happens, then Pakistan's chances of going through will increase but things might also depend on the net run rate.
The blow they faced from the losses against USA and India back-to-back are not only going to impact them in the points table but it will also have a negative impact on their morale. First, the Super Over loss against the United States and then the 5-run loss yesterday has made it much more difficult for them to recover in the 20-team tournament.
After the loss, they endured against India from a winning situation, former Pakistani cricketers have rallied in with criticism. From Shahid Afridi to Mohammad Hafeez, from Wasim Akram to Waqar Younis, everyone is bashing the Pakistan team and its players. Former batsman Basit Ali has also joined the list now.
Basit Ali claims Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, and Babar Azam don't care about Pakistan
While speaking on a local Pakistan-based news channel, Basit Ali was absolutely gutted to see his former National team fail to chase just 120 runs off 120 balls. Ali was seemingly disappointed so he decided to launch a scathing attack on a few players, namely Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, and Babar Azam.
Basit Ali started off by saying that the current Pakistani cricketers feel he is a traitor just because he attends cricket shows and talks about Pakistan cricket. Ali's eyes then filled up with tears as he admitted that he was going to be a Pakistani forever until his last day and that he was a Nationalist.
Basit Ali then claimed that he gets annoyed to see the team play as the players he had selected himself for the U-19 team are playing very badly. Shadab, Shaheen, and Babaar are all players who were given the chance by Ali.
"When we sit here and talk, they say we are traitors and we speak against the Nation. I was a Pakistani, I'm a Pakistani and I will forever be a Pakistani. These guys are annoying. They were literally kids when I had selected them for the U-19s be it Shaheen, Shadab or Babar whoever. And this is how you play against them? This is painful. They don't care about the country," Basit Ali said.
