Former all-rounder Shahid Afridi of Pakistan had a clear opinion on Babar Azam’s future as captain after the side’s 0-3 Test series loss to England.

Tuesday’s third and final Test match between Pakistan and England in Karachi ended in a loss by eight wickets for England. With the loss, Pakistan suffered their first-ever streak of four straight losses and their first-ever Test series sweep at home (one being against Australia earlier this year).

Babar Azam’s leadership has come under scrutiny following the team’s catastrophic 0-3 Test series defeat against England. England defeated Pakistan by an 8-wicket margin in the last Test of the series in Karachi, chasing down a 170-run total in 28.1 overs. The English team, captained by Ben Stokes, maintained their aggressive attitude, known colloquially as the ‘Bazball,’ throughout the Pakistan series, proving their critics wrong.

Meanwhile, Babar is receiving backlash from fans and former cricketers, with many demanding that the star batter step down as captain.

“The mindset of the captain needs to be changed”: Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi, a legendary all-rounder and former cricketer for Pakistan supported Babar Azam and maintained that firing Babar was not the answer to the team’s problems.

“This is not the solution (replacing Babar as captain). The captain’s thinking must be changed. Management must modify their thinking and expect a specific style of cricket from the captain and his squad. If you want to lead the Pakistan squad to victory, you must change Babar’s thinking. It’s not just his fault or responsibility” Shahid Afridi said.

The management is equally responsible because they are considerably more senior. They need to let the players understand what kind of cricket is expected of them, So, if only Babar is being held responsible for this debacle, it would be very unfair,”  Shahid Afridi stated on Samaa TV.

Pakistan will return to the longest format of the game on December 26 when they face New Zealand in a two-Test series.
