New Zealand pacer Matt Henry picked up his first hat-trick against Pakistan in the first T20I of the five-match T20I series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Friday, April 14. Matt Henry became the fourth Kiwi bowler to achieve the milestone in the shorter format, after Jacob Oram, Tim Southee, and Michael Bracewell.

Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first. Matt Henry finished with 3/32 to bundle out the opposition for 182 runs. Adam Milne provided a good start by dismissing Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam for single-digit scores. In the run chase, the Tom Latham-led team managed to score 94 runs, suffering an 88-run loss.

Matt Henry completed his hat trick by dismissing Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Shaheen Afridi. The right pacer picked up the wicket of Shadab on the third ball of the 13th over and dismissed Iftikhar for a golden duck on the next ball. He came to bowl his final over in the 19th over and picked the wicket of Shaheen on the first ball to complete his milestone.

Jacob Oram was the first Black Cap bowler to pick up a hat trick in the short format of the game. Oram achieved the milestone against Sri Lanka in 2009. New Zealand Test captain Tim Southee picked up two hat tricks in his career and was the only bowler to do so more than once after Lasith Malinga. Michael Bracewell picked up his first hat trick against Ireland in 2022.

In a post-match presentation, the Black Caps skipper Tom Latham praised Matt Henry for his hat trick and said that it’s a special milestone.

“Preparation wasn’t ideal, but you got to adapt to the situation. The score was about par and the required rate increased quickly. I knew he (Henry) got a hat trick, a special milestone for him. We get another opportunity later on today,” Latham said.

The Tom Latham-led team will take on the Men in Green in the second T20I match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday, April 15. The visitors will be hoping to bounce back and win the next match to level the series at 1-1.
