Pakistan’s campaign in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is going from bad to worse with each passing day. One of the pre-tournament favourites, they began their sojourn in India with two wins.
The Babar Azam-led side defeated the Netherlands and Sri Lanka in their first two World Cup games. But things have only gone south since then. The two wins were followed by three losses in a row against India, Australia and Afghanistan. While India thrashed them by 7 wickets, Australia and Afghanistan inflicted 62 runs and 8 wickets defeat on them respectively.
And the deteriorating on-field performances have led to rumours and reports of unrest in the dressing room. In fact, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had to issue a statement to deny the rumours. And amidst all these, former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad has made a startling revelation that will only add fuel to the fire.
Ahmed Shehzad’s allegations against Pakistan captain Babar Azam:
Known for giving bold remarks, Ahmed Shehzad has claimed that select players receive preferential treatment, while the others are exposed to difficult situations on the field. Speaking to ARY News, he claimed that it is done to drop the players on the basis of poor performance.
“I’ve talked to some players. Few players are not welcome in the dressing room. They aren’t given the same level of treatment and confidence as some others. They try to keep certain players in the team and drop the others. Tayyab Tahir was brought in, he wasn’t welcome, and was excluded.
Saud Shakeel was brought in based on his Test performances. Usama Mir, we had been saying that give him chances before the World Cup to give him confidence… see, Usama is a wrist-spinner. He’s more effective when the ball is old. And he is brought in the 11th over. They’re trying to save certain players and expose these players instead,” Ahmed Shehzad said.
“We had been saying from quite some time that bring in Abrar Ahmad, mystery spinner is needed. These are our colleagues, these are our friends, and these are not welcome,” he added.
Recently, former captain Misbah-ul-Haq had also revealed that he and his fellow PCB’s cricket technical committee member Mohammad Hafeez wanted Abrar in the squad but their suggestion was rejected by the captain and the team management. Several other former cricketers have also slammed the senior players for their role in Pakistan’s poor performance in the World Cup.
