The 33-year-old Pakistan National Cricket Team left-handed opening batsman Fakhar Zaman once again failed in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 as he got out for a single-digit score in the 5th Match of Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2023 on Thursday, September 14, at the R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
Fakhar Zaman has been going through a lean patch for a long period of time. Ahead of the Asia Cup 2023, he took part in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in Sri Lanka in a bid to prepare for the continental tournament.
However, he had a poor season with B-Love Kandy in LPL 2023 and his poor form continued in the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, which Pakistan won by 3-0. Despite his failures, the Pakistan team management showed trust in him and included him in the playing XI for the Asia Cup 2023 match against India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
After he didn’t score good runs against the aforementioned teams, the decision was made to drop him and he was replaced by Mohammad Haris in the playing XI for the clash against Sri Lanka. Pakistan announced the playing XI a day before the match against the Lankan Lions.
However, he got a lucky chance as just ahead of the game opener Imam-ul-Haq suffered a back spasm and Fakhar Zaman was given a chance in the team to prove his worth, which he failed to do.
On the second ball of the fifth over, pacer Pramod Madushan bowled a terrific 138kph inswinging yorker and the ball rattled the stumps of the opening batsman. Fakhar Zaman scored just 4 runs off 11 balls, before walking back to the hut.
Overall, Fakhar has had an awful run with the bat in the last 10 innings in One Day International (ODI) cricket as he has registered scores of 19, 14, 33, 2, 30, 27, 14, 20, 27, 4 (today). He has scored just 190 runs at a poor average of 19.00.
