The International Cricket Council (ICC) is reportedly considering changing venues for the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. According to the reports, the respective cricket boards, the ICC, and other stakeholders are discussing finalizing the venues of upcoming events.

The West Indies and the United States of America (USA) are the hosts of the 9th edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024. On the other hand, the Champions Trophy is scheduled to be played in Pakistan in 2025. According to the reports, the tournaments are likely to move away from the nations.

News18 CricketNext reported last week that the ICC discussed swapping the host nations for the 2024 and 2030 editions of the World Cup in the shorter format. As per the schedule released by the ICC, England, Ireland, and Scotland have the hosting rights for the T20 World Cup in 2030.

As per the News18 report, the T20 World Cup is set to move away from the West Indies and USA due to a lack of cricketing infrastructure. However, the Caribbean nations are likely to host the 2025 Champions Trophy.

“The current infrastructure situation in the USA is not very encouraging. Even if they successfully host the upcoming Major League Cricket, hosting an event like the T20 World Cup is a different ball game altogether,” says a source tracking developments from close quarters.

“Where will you host the matches when the venues aren’t ready? Also, a long tournament in the far west could be a loss-making proposition for the broadcasters in the sub-continent, where the returns are highest,” added the source.

The West Indies last hosted the ODI World Cup in 2007, which was a financial disaster due to prime-time watching hours and India’s early exit. However, the ICC wants to schedule the tournament according to Indian prime time to get more viewership.

“The four-year rights for the India market alone were sold at US$3b. That’s way too much money to not get your priorities right,” say those in the know.

A year of extra time will help USA Cricket develop the infrastructure to host the multinational event. The Champions Trophy will have fewer matches compared to the T20 World Cup, making it a viable option for the country.
