Fast bowler Pat Cummins has stated that he is open to continuing as Australia’s ODI captain even after the conclusion of the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

The right-arm pacer took charge of the team after Aaron Finch’s retirement from international cricket last year and is leading the team in the World Cup for the first time in his career. He has done a fine job so far, leading the team to the semifinals as Australia chases a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

The five-time champions made a poor start to their campaign. They lost their first game by 6 wickets against hosts India before suffering a crushing 134-run loss at the hands of South Africa. With their campaign on the line, Australia bounced back in style and registered seven wins in a row to storm into the semifinals and set up a mouth-watering clash with South Africa.

Pat Cummins willing to continue as ODI captain:

Pat Cummins’ leadership in the ongoing World Cup has drawn praise from several quarters. And the Australia star has expressed his desire to continue in his role as the captain of the ODI team. Speaking to the media ahead of the semifinal against South Africa, he said:

“We’ll chat about it. We’ve been pretty open, me, Andrew McDonald (head coach) and George Bailey (selector). Around different times in the year, you’re going to have different priorities.

“This is a bit of a one-off year where there are three or four big off-season events. After here, the focus shifts back to Test cricket for a fair while.

“I feel like I’ve been managed really well and looked after in a really, really busy year where you don’t really want to give up any cricket,” added Pat Cummins.

Meanwhile, the World Cup semifinal between Australia and South Africa will take place on Thursday (November 15). The match will take place at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In the first semifinal, hosts India will lock horns against New Zealand in Mumbai.
