Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins’s availability for the white-ball series against South Africa is doubtful due to a wrist injury sustained during the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval. Australia will tour South Africa for the limited-overs series, which is scheduled to begin on August 30.
Pat Cummins sustained a wrist injury on the opening day of the fifth Test. He took the field with heavy strapping after the incident. The right-arm pacer bowled without much discomfort and picked up two wickets. He also scored a crucial 36 runs in Australia’s first innings.
We’ll Get It Assessed Over The Next Few Days – Pat Cummins
Speaking after the fifth day’s play in London, Pat Cummins revealed that he will have his wrist assessed in the coming days.
“I landed on my wrist on day one in the field going for a run-out. It’s pretty sore. We’ll get it assessed over the next few days and work out if anything needs to happen,” he told reporters.
Australia suffered a 49-run loss in the final test, missing the chance to register their first series victory in red-ball cricket on English soil since 2001. Following the Ashes series, Australia will play three T20Is and five ODIs against South Africa in preparation for the ODI World Cup 2023.

Pat Cummins praised Mitchell Starc for his exceptional effort with the ball while struggling with a shoulder injury. Starc had sustained a shoulder injury during the fourth Test but managed to bowl with full intensity in the last two games.
“Mitchell Starc coming off with a sore shoulder in this game was an incredible effort. Managing that throughout this game was just a proper effort,” Cummins said.
“No doubt everyone gets more fatigued, [but] I don’t think that is a huge factor. [We] didn’t get it done. There were key moments we didn’t get right,” he added.
Starc played in five Tests out of six games in the English summer, including the WTC final against India. The left-arm pacer was the leading wicket-taker in the series, picking up 23 wickets in four matches. He was named the Player of the Series for Australia.
