The Knockout of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 took place on Saturday (20th January). Perth Scorchers took on Adelaide Strikers in a thriller at the famous Optus Stadium in Perth, which saw winning the game and advancing to Qualifier 2.
Perth Scorchers won the toss and opted to field first. They were off the flier with the ball Jason Behrendorff removed D’Arcy Short for just 6 runs in the second over. Adelaide Strikers Skipper Matthew Short (13) tried to get going but Andrew Tye outfoxed him with a sensational delivery to send the batter packing.
Thomas Kelly (6) and Harry Nielsen (1) perished early and the Adelaide Strikers came under a lot of pressure, reeling at 48/4. However, after that Jake Weatherland took the onus to himself and played a blinder for his team on a pitch, where every other batter struggled to get going.
Jake Weatherland slammed a blistering half-century and ended with the knock of 56 runs off 32 balls. His innings brought back Adelaide Strikers into the game. But after he perished, Perth Scorchers yet again were on top as they picked wickets quickly to leave them tottering at 129/7.
But Ben Manenti (23) and Henry Thorton (28*) played a vital role in the end. Te The duo played some attacking shots in the end and made sure that they teamed to the fighting total in the game. Their efforts powered Adelaide Strikers to a total of 155/7.
For Perth Scorchers, skipper Aaron Hardie picked two wickets whereas Cooper Connolly chipped in with two scalps as well. Apart from them, Jason Behrendorff and Andrew Tye picked one wicket each and helped the team restrict the opposition to a low total in a high-pressure game.

In the chase, Perth Scorchers were off the flying start, thanks to Sam Fanning. The batter played aggressively and added 38 runs for the opening partnership inside the 5 overs. However, he lost his wicket to Henry Thorton and managed to score just 31 runs, failing to convert the start.
His wicket triggered the collapse for the Perth Scorchers as they came under a lot of pressure. Marcus Harris (8), skipper Aaron Hardie (6), and Sam Whiteman (2) perished early and Perth Scorchers were reduced to 48/4 from 38/1.
Josh Inglis (12) tried to get going but Cameron Boyce castled his stumps with the peach. Cooper Connolly then tried to bail the team out of trouble. He played some good shots in his innings but didn’t get the support from the other end as Perth Scorchers lost wickets in quick succession.
Cooper Connolly looked unfazed by the wickets falling at the other end. He kept his team in the hunt with his valiant knock of 31 runs. But in the attempt to score quickly, he got out in the end. Adelaide Strikers bundled out the opposition for just 105 runs to win the game by 50 runs.
Lloyd Pope was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 4/25. Cameron Boyce picked two wickets whereas Matthew Short, David Payne, and Henry Thorton also bagged one wicket each. Adelaide Strikers will now be taking on Brisbane Heat in Qualifier 2.
