Prabath Jayasuriya Bags ICC Player Of The Month Award
Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya won the International Cricket Council (ICC) Player of the Month award following a brilliant start to his international Test career.
Jayasuriya debuted against Australia in the second Test of the home series and took figures of 6/118 and 6/59 to help the Lankans level the 2-match Test series 1-1.
In the 2-match Test series against Pakistan, Jayasuriya took nine wickets in the first Test and eight wickets in the second to end with a whopping tally of 29 wickets in just three Tests.
“I am delighted with this announcement, and wish to thank the fans for voting me as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. Certainly it has been an incredible month for me, as I made the Test debut, and also got the opportunity to contribute for my team to level the Test series played against Australia and Pakistan.”
“I take this opportunity to thank my fans, team-mates, coaches, family and friends for helping my journey, and thrilled with what I am experiencing at this moment in my life,” Jayasuriya said.
“A tally of 29 wickets in just three Tests is too good to be overlooked” – Irfan Pathan on Prabath Jayasuriya
Speaking about the decision, ICC voting panel member, Irfan Pathan, said Jayasuriya’s records speak for themselves and he rightfully beat the other two contenders, Jonny Bairstow and Gustav McKeon.
“Being a newcomer to Test cricket and starting with two five-wicket hauls in your first match is extraordinary, and it’s all the more impressive against a team like Australia.”
“A tally of 29 wickets in just three Tests is too good to be overlooked and for that, he is my ICC Men’s Player of the Month,” Pathan mentioned.
