Maharashtra batter Prithvi Shaw was seen engaged in a heated argument with Mumbai's Musheer Khan after he was mocked by the bowler during Day 1 of the warm-up game between Maharashtra and his former side, Mumbai. The associations have decided to call in Dilip Vengsarkar to head the investigation into the issue.
The mockery of the two players was met by a nearly physical incident involving Maharashtra batter Prithvi Shaw and the Mumbai team's part-time spinner. The ugly spat escalated to an extent where Shaw swung his bat at Musheer, almost grabbing his collar. The umpires had to rush in to intervene between the two players and ensure that the issue ended without causing much harm to anyone.
Musheer Khan triggered Prithvi Shaw, saying, 'Thank You' after dismissal
Prithvi Shaw was dismissed after having scored 181 runs off just 219 balls, while he also contributed to a huge triple-century partnership alongside left-handed opener Arshin Kulkarni. He was dismissed by the bowling of off-spinner Musheer Khan.
Shaw was triggered after Musheer Khan dismissed him and said, 'Thank You' to him. That was when the hot-headed Maharashtra batter lost his cool and had to go at the 20-year-old brother of Indian Test cricketer Sarfaraz Khan.
Prithvi Shaw is no stranger to controversies, as he has found himself in controversy several times since his debut for India back in 2018. He has switched sides in domestic cricket, hoping to regain form and earn his spot back in the Indian Test side.
Dilip Vengsarkar has been called in by the Mumbai Cricket Association to investigate the confrontation
Both Prithvi Shaw and Musheer might be in trouble if any wrongdoing is suspected or if either of the two players is found to have crossed the line. Hence, none other than the 'Colonel' of Indian cricket, Dilip Vengsarkar, has been brought in to investigate the matter.
“There will be a [Mumbai Ranji team] selection committee meeting on Thursday, so we will ask them - the Mumbai captain, coach and the player - about what happened."
Largely known for having a no-nonsense approach during his tenure as the chairman of the BCCI's selection committee. Vengsarkar was cited as the ideal person to handle the situations.
"We will be getting a report [of this incident] during our selection committee meeting, and former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, who is our Advisor, will speak to them [players],” Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Abhay Hadap told mid-day.
Maharashtra Cricket Association is to take a similar approach to resolve the issue
While the Mumbai Cricket Association has already initiated measures to investigate the issue between the two players, the Maharashtra Association also needs to maintain transparency on the issue, since a player associated with their association is also involved.
"I'm still awaiting the report [on the incident]. I will be obtaining detailed information [about the incident] and if something is found, depending on the gravity of the situation and considering the importance of discipline, we will speak to both the players [Shaw and Musheer]. Discipline among players is a very important aspect," Adv Kamlesh Pisal, secretary of the Maharashtra Cricket Association, told mid-day.
