Since the 2014 season, when the Punjab Kings (PBKS) finished as the runners-up of the Indian Premier League (IPL), losing the final against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), they have failed to qualify for the top four in the next 10 years. Their best standing of the last decade was five in 2017.
Not many teams finish at the penultimate position among the top franchises in a league when they have one bowler ending with the purple cap, but that is the exact case with this franchise. For the 2025 edition, they have brought significant changes in the squad, including head coach Ricky Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer.
They also signed the premier Indian leg-spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, and retained just two youngsters from last season.
Punjab Kings to face RCB on back-to-back occasions
The Shreyas Iyer-led side will begin their campaign against the 2022 Champions, Gujarat Titans, three days after the official start of the 20-over tournament. They will make a trip to the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihar Bajpayee Stadium for the second encounter against Luckow Super Giants. This means they would play only two days in the first 10 days of the season.
The next few games will start to come thick and fast for them. Punjab Kings’ first home game at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur will be against the inaugural champions of the league, Rajasthan Royals (RR), before taking on the Chennai Super Kings three days later at the same venue.
Punjab will fly to the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium for the fifth clash of the season against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The next home game against the Kolkata Knight Riders will be interesting for Shreyas, who, despite leading the purple franchise to their third IPL title, was ignored for retention in the fresh season.
Punjab Kings to play three successive home games in Dharamshala
In two days, Punjab Kings will face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) twice. The first clash will be at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium before the action returns to Chandigarh in an afternoon fixture. In the head-to-head of both these sides, Punjab has enjoyed a slight advantage with a lead of 17-16 over Bengaluru, who even though are unbeaten in the face-off since 2023.
As the season starts to move towards the business end, it will be a new challenge for the Punjab Kings, who will make a trip to Eden Gardens for the return fixture against the Kolkata Knight Riders. They will also head south for the away clash against the Chennai Super Kings. In the last seven clashes, they have a lead of 5-2 over the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side.
On May 04, the entire action for the Punjab Kings will move to the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in Dharamshala. The first game at the venue will be against the Super Giants before they take on Delhi Capitals. The last home clash of the IPL 2025 for the Kings will be against the Mumbai Indians before ending against the Rajasthan side in an away encounter.
