Team India head coach Rahul Dravid addressed the controversial run incident during the third and final T20I against Afghanistan. Rahul Dravid acknowledged that frustration might arise, but such occurrences are part of the game and are acceptable within limits.

The Rohit Sharma-led team emerged as winners in a thrilling encounter at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, January 17. The match ended in a tie after the regulation 20 overs for both teams. Two super-overs were played to determine the outcome.

In the first super over, Mohammad Nabi failed to connect with a shot on the final ball from Mukesh Kumar but attempted a bye. Wicketkeeper Sanju Samson’s throw deflected off Nabi’s pads to Virat Kohli at long on, and they managed to complete two extra runs.

It Is Part Of The Game – Rahul Dravid

The animated exchange was evident between Nabi and Rohit Sharma regarding the controversial extra runs. Rahul Dravid acknowledged such incidents as part of the game, expressing that occasional frustration is natural but within acceptable limits.

“It is part of the game. It is fine. Sometimes you get frustrated that it happens, but it’s fair enough, all part of the game. It hit the non-striker and it moved. And I think that’s fine and you can run for those,” Dravid said.

Those additional runs did not prove costly for India, as they leveled Afghanistan’s score during their turn. The game proceeded to a second super over, where India secured a 10-run victory. Ravi Bishnoi restrained Afghanistan to just one run in the second superover.

The Ball Hit The Bat Of One Of Our Batsmen And We Took A Run – Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid compared the controversial run incident to a similar situation in the first T20I match. The 51-year-old emphasized that as long as it didn’t cross a line, such instances were acceptable.

“In the first T20, I think there was an incident where the ball hit the bat of one of our batsmen and we took a run as well. So I think there is nothing to read into it and I don’t think there is anything in the rules that stops you from actually taking those runs.”

“Arguments can happen at the end of tight games. I think when you play for your country, there is so much passion and emotion and I think it is incredible that even in dead rubber games when it gets down to the wire, the competitiveness and passion come out,” Dravid added.

India secured a clean sweep in the three-match series against Afghanistan, maintaining their unbeaten T20I record against them. This series marked India’s final T20I assignment before the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies in June.
