Rohit Sharma Player Profile, Age, Career, Bowling & Batting Stats

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma

India
India | Batter

Rohit Sharma is an Indian cricketer, who is currently captaining the Indian National Team. Born in Bansod, Nagpur, Rohit began his professional journey way back in 2006 with a List A match for the West Zone against Central Zone.

Rohit Sharma started off his career as an off-spinner and his talent was spotted by a local coach named Dinesh Lad, who was a friend of his uncle. It was Lad who identified his talent and also made sure he got quality coaching from high-end training facilities in 1999.

7 years later, he got the chance of playing his first professional match for West Zone after which he was picked for the Indian A team for their tour of New Zealand where Rohit Sharma played his first ever First-class match.

Later on, Rohit was picked for the Mumbai team for the Ranji Trophy for the 2006-07 season and therein, he impressed the coaches by scoring a double century against Gujarat. He also had a half-century to his name in the final which Mumbai had won.

He has scored a total of 9123 runs from 120 matches for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, 12,951 runs from 333 One-day matches, and 11,417 from the 432 T20 matches. Rohit Sharma then played all 3 formats of domestic cricket for Mumbai.

He made his Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy back in 2007, several months before a call-up from the Indian National team came up. He made his International debut in an ODI match against Ireland on June 23, 2007, in Belfast but he did not bat in the match.

Rohit made his T20 international debut for India in 2007 during the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup edition in South Africa.

Rohit Sharma's debut T20I came in the match where Yuvraj Singh smacked Stuart Broad for 6 sixes in a row during the India Vs England clash.

In his very next T20I against South Africa, Rohit scored his maiden half-century and was also named as man of the match for the remaining 50* off 40 balls with India winning by 37 runs.

He was also a key part of the Indian team during the T20 World Cup semi-final win against Australia and the final triumph against Pakistan.

In the finals of the T20 WC, Rohit had the second-highest score of 30* off 16 with Gautam Gambhir scoring the most runs - 75.

The major transformation in his career came in 2013 when then-captain MS Dhoni pushed him to open the innings for India.

Rohit Sharma then formed a lethal duo with Shikhar Dhawan from that year onwards and the duo were imperative in helping India win the 2013 Champions Trophy.

It was the same year when he was appointed as captain of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. He was bought by MI during the 2011 mega auction and before that from 2008 to 2010, Rohit had represented the Deccan Chargers.

He got his first taste of the IPL trophy with the franchise in 2009 which was captained by Aussie legend Adam Gilchrist. The Chargers had defeated RCB in the finals. In 2013, after Ricky Ponting stepped down from captaincy.

Rohit Sharma took over and led the franchise towards their maiden IPL title which was also his first as the captain. It was the same season wherein he experienced his most prolific IPL season with the bat, scoring 538 runs from 19 matches.

Rohit Sharma then led the Mumbai Indians to 4 more IPL titles. In 2015, his side defeated the Chennai Super Kings. In 2017, MI came out on top against the Rising Pune Super Giants before once again beating CSK in the 2019 final.

The 2020 season saw Mumbai win their 5th title as they defeated the Delhi Capitals in the finale, held in Dubai. Overall, Rohit is a 6-time IPL winner and has scored 6472 runs from 249 IPL matches at a strike rate of 131 and averages 30.10.

In the richest league, Rohit is the 4th highest overall and 3rd highest Indian run-scorer and has 42 half-centuries, 2 centuries along with 272 sixes and 582 fours.

In 2018, Rohit won his first trophy with the Indian team when they lifted the 50-over Asia Cup in UAE. 3 years later in 2021, Rohit was officially appointed as the full-time captain of the white-ball team, succeeding Virat Kohli in that role.

Months later, he received captaincy of the Test team as well and he has remained the captain till date.

His first major assignment as captain of India in an ICC event came during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia where the Men in Blue crashed out of the tournament from the semi-finals with a 10-wicket defeat to England.

Then in 2023, he helped India appear in their second consecutive WTC finale but therein, India lost to Australia in June. Another opportunity to win an ICC silverware came in October-November through the Cricket World Cup on home soil.

Rohit Sharma led the team towards an invincible performance in the league phases, winning 10 out of their 10 matches but eventually lost to Australia again in the final on November 19th at the Narendra Modi stadium.

Earlier that year, he was removed from T20I captaincy for the appointment of Hardik Pandya but Rohit Sharma will captain team India in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies, which is going to be a 20-team affair.

In terms of stats, Rohit has scored a total of 18,820 international runs - 4137 in Test cricket, 10,709 in ODI cricket, and 3974 in the shortest format.

Rohit is among those batters who have scored a century on Test debut and have scored hundreds in both innings of a Test match.

He also holds the record of scoring the highest number of runs in an innings from the opening position when he amassed 264 runs against Sri Lanka in Eden Gardens.

He has scored the most centuries in an ODI World Cup - 5 during the 2019 CWC. Rohit Sharma also holds the record for most runs through fours and sixes in ODI innings when scored 186 through boundaries against the Lankans.

It took him 241 ODI innings to complete Ten thousand ODI runs, which is the 2nd fastest by a batsman.

The 36-year-old has also played most T20Is - 151, has scored the second most runs in the format, most sixes in the format - 190, 2nd most ducks in the format - 12 as well as the most hundreds - 5.
