Veteran batter Rohit Sharma remains at the center of attention ahead of the IPL 2026 clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The opener is still recovering from a hamstring injury, creating uncertainty over his availability for the match at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, April 29.
The Hardik Pandya-led team needs their senior batter after a poor run in the tournament. They are coming off a heavy 103-run defeat to Chennai Super Kings and are currently in ninth place in the 10-team table. The team must deliver a strong turnaround in their remaining seven matches to stay in the playoff race.
Is Rohit Sharma Set to Play MI vs SRH IPL 2026 Match?
Rohit Sharma sustained a hamstring injury during a home defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 12. After retiring hurt during that run chase, he missed three consecutive matches, forcing Mumbai Indians to reshuffle their top order.
According to a Times of India report, the team management will take a final call on matchday. Although Rohit has resumed light training and net sessions, the franchise is being cautious and avoiding any risk with his return.
Before the injury, Rohit had scored 137 runs at a strike rate of 165.06. As he nears his 39th birthday, concerns remain over his fitness and whether he will return soon in the IPL.
Mumbai Indians Struggle To Find Stable Opening Combination
Mumbai Indians have recorded some of the poorest batting numbers this season. The team has scored just 1173 runs overall, including only 366 runs during the powerplay, which shows their inability to generate early momentum during crucial run chases.
Mumbai Indians have repeatedly experimented with different opening combinations in Rohit Sharma’s absence but without any success. MI tried overseas options like Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton, before handing a debut to youngster Danish Malewar, who managed scores of 2 and 0 in his first two matches.
This continued top-order instability has affected the entire batting lineup. While Tilak Varma remains the leading run-scorer, senior players such as Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Sherfane Rutherford have struggled for consistency, failing to build rhythm throughout the tournament.
Mitchell Santner Ruled Out of IPL 2026
Adding to their problems, Mumbai Indians have lost Mitchell Santner for the remainder of the tournament. The New Zealand all-rounder injured his left shoulder while attempting a diving catch against Chennai Super Kings, forcing the franchise to bring in Keshav Maharaj as his replacement.
Facing Sunrisers Hyderabad now becomes an even tougher task for a depleted Mumbai Indians side. Under the leadership of Pat Cummins, SRH have built a strong bowling unit, while their explosive batting lineup continues to dominate with top numbers in runs, averages, and six-hitting this season.
Rohit Sharma has had modest returns against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. In 25 innings, Rohit Sharma has scored 535 runs at an average of 24.32 and a strike rate of 136.13. Despite this record, Mumbai Indians will rely heavily on their experienced opener in this must-win contest.
