Legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has lashed out at the Rajasthan Royals for what he sees as one of the biggest blunders of the ongoing IPL 2025 season—the shocking release of English star Jos Buttler amid their horrific campaign in the tournament.
Despite being a mainstay of the Rajasthan Royals for six years, Jos Buttler was released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, where Gujarat Titans purchased the English star for a staggering INR 15.75 crore, and now he is shining even brighter, only to make his former team regret it.
RR’s decision to release Jos Buttler backfired badly
Buttler, who was the most expensive overseas player in the mega auction, has flourished in a new role at No. 3 for the Gujarat Titans. Despite not getting his usual opening position, the 34-year-old batter has racked up 406 runs in just nine innings at a stunning strike rate of 168.46.
Rajasthan Royals’ decision to go all-in with an Indian core has backfired badly. Their captain, Sanju Samson, has missed most of the ongoing 2025 season due to injury. Riyan Parag, once hailed as the breakout star, has failed to recreate his previous season’s magic.
Their other expensive stars, Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer, failed to deliver in the crunch moments. RR’s poor decisions were on full display during their humiliating 100-run defeat to the Mumbai Indians at home that virtually ended their IPL 2025 playoff hopes.

Adam Gilchrist blames the Rajasthan Royals' Jos Buttler release for their poor IPL 2025 campaign
Recently, Adam Gilchrist didn’t hold back while reacting to Rajasthan Royals’ decision to release an experienced match-winner like Buttler despite not having any dependable overseas batting anchor at the side.
The Australian great has pointed out how CSK admitted their auction errors, but nobody is taking the accountability from the RR camp for this monumental mistake.
Adam Gilchrist was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz, “We heard Mike Hussey admit that they (CSK) got it wrong at the auction, and they are out. Someone needs to be accountable for what happened with the decision on Jos Buttler. RR has got it wrong, and they find themselves eliminated as well. So, there has got to be some accountability. I would have thought certainly, internally, they have got to be asking questions. That was a monumental mistake.”
I was still not over it: Sanju Samson on releasing Jos Buttler
Before the start of the season, the RR captain, Sanju Samson, said that it was a really tough call for him to release Buttler as the franchise could retain only the wicketkeeper, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Sandeep Sharma, and Shimron Hetmyer.
Samson had told Jio Hotstar, “Letting him go has been one of the most challenging decisions for me. During the England series, I told him over dinner that I was still not over it. If I could change one thing in the IPL, I would change the rule of releasing players every three years.”
Notably, Rajasthan Royals remained at the eighth spot in the IPL 2025 points table with six points from 11 games so far in the tournament. They will face the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on May 4 in their next IPL 2025 clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
