Ranji Trophy: Mumbai Defeat Uttarakhand By 725 Runs; Break 92-year Record For Highest Margin Of Victory In First-Class Cricket
Domestic giants Mumbai demolished Uttarakhand by a whopping margin of 725 runs on Thursday, June 9, to register the biggest margin of victory in first-class cricket history.
In their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal clash, Mumbai surpassed the previous highest margin of victory – 685 runs, held by New South Wales and became part of the history books.
Batting first, the Prithvi Shaw-led side posted a mammoth total of 647/8 decl. in the first innings. Suved Parkar scored a blistering double century on debut while Sarfaraz Khan continued his exploits with a 205-ball 153.
In response, Uttarakhand was blown away for 114 with Shams Mulani taking a five-wicket haul. Opener Kamal Singh was the top scorer with 40 while R Bist and Dikshanshu Singh were the only others to reach two figures.
Mumbai opted to bat once again and they piled up 261/3 decl. in just 58 overs with Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring 103 runs in 150 balls, studded with ten fours and two sixes.
Chasing 794 for an improbable win, Uttarakhand fared worse than the first innings and were skittled out for 69 in 27.5 overs, handing Shaw and co. a massive 725-run victory.
They will now square off against Uttar Pradesh in the 2nd semifinal of the Ranji Trophy 2021-22 season in Bengaluru from June 14-18. UP caused an upset by defeating favorites, Karnataka by 5 wickets on Wednesday.
