Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri is not holding himself back from openly criticizing Indian captain Shubman Gill and the current Indian management. This time around, the former coach has unleashed his fury on the coach-captain duo for resting Jasprit Bumrah in the Edgbaston Test.
Shubman Gill at the toss called the decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah, citing the importance of the Lord's Test and hence to utilize him there; he has been rested at Edgbaston.
Ravi Shastri slams Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir on Bumrah snub
After the coin toss, Shastri was baffled by the non-selection of Jasprit Bumrah for the second test, as he remarked that when one has the No. 1-ranked Test bowler on your side, he should be played under all possibilities. Shastri also cited the call for resting Bumrah as unnecessary, as there was a transition of 7 days in between the two Tests.
“You have the best fast bowler in the world, and you make him sit out after seven days of rest. That is something very hard to believe,” complained Ravi Shastri.
"And like you mentioned, a week between test matches—this is an important test match, a must-win game for India. If they have to stay alive in the series, then you need your premier fast bowler playing. And no ifs and buts, he should have been playing," Shastri added to his claims.
Jasprit Bumrah has been replaced by Akash Deep
Jasprit Bumrah, India's premier fast bowler, has been replaced by speedster Akash Deep in the Indian playing 11 for the Edgbaston test. Bumrah was India's finest pace bowler with 5 wickets in the first innings of the Leeds Test.
He also followed with an economical yet wicketless second innings. Bumrah has been seen in the nets at Birmingham as he toiled himself up bowling at his full swing. However, Akash Deep makes his entry into the 11 following his last match in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
India will now head forward with three pacers: Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna, while Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar remain as the spin options.

'Kuldeep Yadav, that guy has to wait' - Ravi Shastri on Kuldeep's snub from the India 11
Alongside Jasprit Bumrah, who rested for the second Test, Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav, whose return was anticipated in the Indian test side, has not been picked in the 11.
Kuldeep Yadav has not been picked; instead, Shardul Thakur has been replaced by all-rounder Washington Sundar, who is both a crucial lower-order batter and right-arm off-spinner.
Citing this change, Shubman Gill, the new captain, clarified at the toss that despite being lured to bring in Kuldeep Yadav as a frontline spinner into the side by several veterans of the game, the Indian management decided to strengthen the Indian lower-order batting with the inclusion of Washington Sundar.
"I am a little surprised Sai Sudharsan is dropped. He played really well in that Test match. Kuldeep Yadav, that guy has to wait. Poor chap," said Ravi Shastri.
"This becomes a very important Test match" 👀
