Former Team India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has issued a clarification on the controversy surrounding his remarks on Dewald Brevis' signing during IPL 2025. Ashwin’s comments on the youngster’s signing by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had sparked debate on social media.

Chennai Super Kings were forced to issue an official statement after Ravichandran Ashwin alleged that the franchise had paid an “extra” amount to secure Dewald Brevis. The South African batter, who had a base price of ₹75 lakh at the mega auction, initially went unsold.

However, CSK later brought him into the squad as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh during the 2025 season. The 22-year-old joined the five-time champions for ₹2.20 crore, a figure much higher than his auction base price. Ravichandran Ashwin's comments sparked debate around the deal.

CSK Has Never Gone the Wrong Way - Ravichandran Ashwin Clarifies on Dewald Brevis’ Signing

Ravichandran Ashwin accused Aakash Chopra of deliberately trying to create friction between him and Chennai Super Kings following the Dewald Brevis controversy. He clarified that his remarks had been misrepresented by headlines.

Ravichandran Ashwin maintained that CSK’s decision to sign Brevis should be viewed as a smart move for the team’s future and added that the franchise was wrong.

"CSK has never gone the wrong way. No one has ever said that they were wrong. If anyone comes to me with such a statement, I will ask them to change their opinion. Because the headlines should be read like this from their side: CSK's masterstroke to sign Dewald Brevis, the future of the team. Headlines should be like this. I have nothing to do with the headlines," Ravichandran Ashwin said.

Is There a Loophole? - Aakash Chopra on Dewald Brevis’ CSK Signing

Earlier, Aakash Chopra raised doubts over whether Chennai Super Kings exploited a loophole in the replacement rules when they signed Dewald Brevis for IPL 2025.

"He didn't play the first match, but after that, he batted extremely well and took an incredible catch on the boundary. Ashwin has disclosed that he asked for more money. Is there any provision to give him more money than he should have gotten officially? In such a case, can the purse limit be broken? Is there a loophole there, which Ashwin has highlighted?" Chopra had said.

CSK Finished Bottom for the First Time Ever in IPL 2025 Season

Chennai Super Kings endured a forgettable IPL 2025 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table for the first time in their history with only four wins in 14 games. The franchise signed Dewald Brevis as an injury replacement after left-arm pacer Gurjapneet Singh was ruled out of the season.

Brevis, who had entered the mega auction with a base price of ₹75 lakh but went unsold, was later picked up for ₹2.2 crore from the Registered Available Player Pool. The young South African made an impact by scoring 225 runs in just six matches at a strike rate of 180, which included two half-centuries.

Brevis carried his form into international cricket, smashing a century in the T20I series against Australia. He became the youngest South African to score a T20I hundred and also registered the country’s second-fastest century, reaching the mark in just 41 balls.
