The India-Pakistan fiasco has been taking its toll on the game of cricket very frequently in recent times. While India took an undeniable stand to not travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, citing security concerns, and then snubbed friendly conduct with them during their Asia Cup meetups.

Escalating this issue, Pakistan cited ICC conduct against Bangladesh and plotted for revenge against them. They announced their participation in the upcoming World Cup but at the same time informed us they would not be playing in the fixture against India, which was scheduled for the 15th of February.

"The India-Pakistan match will happen, 100 per cent" - Ravichandran Ashwin

Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has remarked that Pakistan have no choice but to back down from their standpoint for the upcoming T20 World Cup. When Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland in the ICC tournament, Pakistan made these announcements to back Bangladesh.

The ICC immediately warned the PCB of dire consequences if they do not back down. However, Pakistan are refusing to budge an inch despite knowing that they could be imposed with financial as well as disciplinary sanctions.

"The India-Pakistan match will happen, 100 per cent. In fact, I think in the next 2,3,or 4 days, they will reverse their boycott. That is my hunch. I want to see the India-Pakistan match. There is a lot of business decisions in this. After all of this, if Pakistan decides to play against them on February 15, what will their mindset be?" Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, as he clearly stated that the situation would take a clear U-Turn.

India-Pakistan boards have no negotiations ahead of the T20 World Cup

India and Pakistan played three times in the 2025 Asia Cup despite the attacks on the Pahalgam valley in India, which they blamed on Pakistan. However, many also claimed that Pakistan might have withdrawn because they are afraid of defeats against India.

According to the latest reports, as of now, the BCCI and the PCB are not under any negotiations, and the governing bodies of the ICC and the PCB have had no further discussions between them.

Pakistan have arrived in Sri Lanka for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, and will be playing their first warm-up game against Ireland on the 4th of February, before they enter the World Cup league-stage matches.

Ravichandran Ashwin cites Pakistan's standpoint as a meaningless pursuit

Ravichandran Ashwin also pointed out the many instances in ICC tournaments when teams have denied playing against specific oppositions or have denied travelling to a particular place. However, he believes that those decisions were completely made, citing security threats by nations like Australia, New Zealand and England.

However, Pakistan are unreasonable since they have already been handed a neutral venue and have absolutely no security concerns, since India will travel to Sri Lanka to play against their archrivals, Pakistan.

"Pakistan could face massive losses with this. They will have to pay broadcasters for the loss they are causing, that is not going to happen. So, I think they will have to compromise. Pakistan already got a neutral venue to play against India, so to say that 'I will not play against a particular opponent' is not acceptable in many ways. I hope better sense prevails," Ravichandran Ashwin said.
