Amid the recent backlash for the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, former teammate and legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed his coaching style and has highlighted his white-ball success.
Many have been criticizing Gautam Gambhir's Test numbers, and hence some have now surfaced who are praising his stats as India's coach in the other two formats of international cricket. One of them is former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
Since taking over as coach, Gautam Gambhir has won the series against England and the Champions Trophy as part of his major projects. However, he had lost a series against Sri Lanka and recently lost another in Australia.
“I think GG, the white-ball coach, has already left a bit of a stamp” - Ravichandran Ashwin hits hard at Gautam Gambhir's critics
Ravichandran Ashwin has claimed that Gautam Gambhir has already shown what he is capable of with his tremendous dominance in white-ball cricket. He has also opined that Gambhir has actively brought an aggressive limited-overs approach within the Indian team.
While highlighting his calibre as a white-ball coach, R Ashwin said, “I think GG, the white-ball coach, has already left a bit of a stamp.” He has not only picked aggressive cricketers but is also reshaping the mindset of Indian cricketers in limited-overs cricket.
“But that is a lot of credit to the IPL in many ways. It’s thrown up some really stunning, stunning white-ball cricketers for India,” Ashwin quickly also noted that it was IPL that helped Gambhir set a tone for coaching and later pick players from the IPL season to bolster India's T20I campaigns.
"A fearless brand of cricket which we always wanted to happen," Ashwin said
Several big names have made it to International cricket from the IPL; however, Ravichandran Ashwin picked Abhishek Sharma as the one, who dissolved the bridge between the IPL and international cricket.
“And, namely, Abhishek Sharma. That’s one cricketer I would love to watch out for again in the T20 format. His exploits around the format will also dictate where India go in the T20 World Cup.”
"A bit of a fearless approach. Once upon a time, I played for India in the T20 format and always wanted the batters to play in this fashion. It doesn’t always happen when you’re playing. It has to happen when you’re retired. So, I’m glad it’s happened. A fearless brand of cricket, which we always wanted to happen,” Ashwin said about India's new style of play.
After all the praise for the coach, Ravichandran Ashwin finally had some good words in store for the Indian captain. But he was careful to draw a line between Gambhir's white-ball expertise and his limited prowess in red-ball coaching.
“With Surya at the helm, that is a T20 side that would be feared on its day. Sure, that team will have its Achilles heel. But they look to have all bases covered with Bumrah’s defensive bowling,” Ravichandran Ashwin added.
Gautam Gambhir humiliated by fans: After Guwahati, now in Ranchi
Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has been facing the anger and frustration of their fans as well. After India lost the Test in Guwahati, the stadium was filled with slogans of 'Gautam Gambhir haye haye,' and the public hooted against him.
While Gambhir was in the practice session with the Indian team in Ranchi before the start of the ODI series, a viral video clearly shows a man teasing Gambhir and also asking him to let go of coaching. Maybe Gambhir is looking forward to answering with trophies rather than words this time around.
