Recently, former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed that Eoin Morgan is the strong candidate to take over as the new head coach of the Chennai Super League ahead of the IPL 2027. Earlier, Ex-CSK star said, 'If Hardik Pandya comes, Ruturaj Gaikwad will lose captaincy'.
Morgan does not have top-level coaching experience, but his calm and effective leadership is well-known to everyone. As the franchises’ search for the new head coach continues, Ashwin shared that Morgan’s name is already being discussed strongly for the CSK position.
However, it is still not clear whether Morgan would take charge immediately or join the franchise before the 2028 IPL mega auction . The former CSK off-spinner has even hinted that the franchise can “offer a 4-year contract to Morgan," leading into the 2028 IPL mega auction.
Ravichandran Ashwin said in a video posted on his YouTube channel: “I have a feeling Eoin Morgan might be coming… His name is doing the rounds strongly... Early discussions are on, no doubt. In this, there are two scenarios: Eoin Morgan—will he take it this year? Or someone else builds the team in a mini auction, and he takes it later?”
Eoin Morgan’s IPL experience stands out
Eoin Morgan has plenty of IPL experience despite not having worked as a head coach. The Irish legend started his IPL career with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2010. He later played for Punjab Kings, then known as Kings XI Punjab, before becoming an important part of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He even led the KKR to the 2021 IPL final.
He also played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the tournament. Morgan has 1405 runs to his name in 75 IPL innings at an average of 22.66 and a strike rate of 122.60. His best score was an unbeaten 68 against Rajasthan Royals.
The former England captain, who also captained Ireland at the highest level, also scored five half-centuries during his T20 career. The former aggressive middle-order batter also smashed 112 fours and 64 sixes.

Ashwin said, “I have a strong hunch that under Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together… Personally, that route is the correct one. I still think so. Because the appointment will be a touch late. Because the mega auction is only one year away. … My strongest hunch is that under MS Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together.
