England’s humiliating exit from the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has raised serious concerns about their mindset, and Ravichandran Ashwin did not hold back in his criticism. Ashwin took a dig at England’s approach, questioning whether they truly respect subcontinental conditions.
Ravichandran Ashwin pointed out England’s disastrous run in the ICC tournaments, mentioning they had a forgettable 2023 ODI World Cup campaign and then failed to qualify for the World Test Championship final, and now their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 dreams are also shattered.

He also recalled Ben Duckett’s controversial statement, where he casually said that losing ODI series to India won’t matter when they beat them in the Champions Trophy 2025 final. Recently, Jos Buttler didn’t also provide any clear answer on his captaincy, and Ashwin slammed their overconfidence and questioned if they underestimated the challenge on the big stages.

Ravichandran Ashwin said on his Hindi YouTube channel “Ash Ki Baat”: “I saw Jos Buttler’s post-match interview (after the Afghanistan game). He was very candid in saying, ‘I do not know what my leadership aspirations are in the future.’ With all that in mind, I think England is at a crossroads. Ben Duckett's and Jos’ statement reflects their mindset. Is it so easy to go to a major competition and win the final?”
Meanwhile, the former Indian off-spinner has questioned England's inconsistent template in batting. He believes that England needs to reassess their aggressive playing style.
You treats subcontinental tours just as a tick box: Ashwin
Ashwin further added, “You were marketing and branding Harry Brook as the next generation sensation. But Harry Brook’s game is also sinking. He is now under immense pressure to produce match-winning knocks. What’s happened with England in this Bazball generation is something that they have to retrospect.”
Ashwin also mentioned that England won the ODI World Cup 2019 at home and the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, but they actually haven’t won anything of repute in the subcontinent.

Ravichandran Ashwin further noted, “Ravi Shastri has given an amazing comment: that England needs to take sub-continental tours very seriously. Teams like Australia travel very well. They prepare well. They perform well. South Africa also prepares. They put in good performances. But England, I still feel, treats subcontinental tours just as a tick box. Has the time come for England to really dig in and think about it?”
Ravichandran Ashwin suggests England to hire Asian coaches for subcontinental conditions
On the other hand, Ashwin has questioned England’s coaching setup, saying their staff lacks the experience needed to get success in subcontinental conditions. He pointed out that teams like India have benefited from foreign coaches like Gary Kirsten, Duncan Fletcher, and Greg Chappell in the past, but England is still following its traditional coaching system.
Ashwin believes that despite having immense talent, England struggles to adapt in challenging conditions. With players like Jofra Archer and Mark Wood in their ranks, the team has the potential, but without the right preparation and guidance, they would continue to suffer in the subcontinent.
