Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has slammed the BCCI and the national selectors over the ongoing buzz around Suryakumar Yadav. There have been reports that Suryakumar Yadav could not only lose India’s T20I captaincy but might also be left out of the squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.
These speculations have left many stunned as Suryakumar led India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year and did not lose a single T20I series as captain. Despite this, the national selectors now seem ready to move in a different direction because of Suryakumar’s poor form with the bat.
Shreyas Iyer set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20I captain
The All-India Senior Men's Selection Committee will meet on Saturday (June 6) to pick the squad for the upcoming T20I series in Ireland and England. While Shreyas Iyer is expected to take over as the new captain, the right-handed batter is set to be dropped from the side entirely.
The main reason behind the move is the long-standing poor form with the bat. Suryakumar had a disappointing IPL 2026 season for the Mumbai Indians after his not-too-impressive T20 World Cup campaign. Even Suryakumar’s struggles have continued in the ongoing Mumbai T20 League.
Ravichandran Ashwin questions selectors' 'Human Touch' as Suryakumar Yadav faces possible India axe
However, Ravichandran Ashwin is not happy with the way things are unfolding. Ashwin feels that removing Suryakumar Yadav as captain is understandable, but completely dropping him from the squad. He questioned whether the selectors lost the human touch.
Ashwin pointed out that the Mumbai Indians batter entered IPL 2026 when he was also going through a major phase in his personal life as he prepared to become a father, and such moments naturally affect a player's focus and intensity.
Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel "Ash Ki Baat": “It was expected that his intensity would come down, but one shouldn't forget that he was the T20 World Cup-winning captain. Where have we lost the human touch? Where has it gone? An Indian captain who won the tournament could have had a bit of a human touch. I accept that he didn't perform with the bat, but give him some time. Give him one final chance. Remove him from captaincy, okay. But how is it fine to drop him?”

Ravichandran Ashwin slams 'Ruthless' approach as Suryakumar Yadav faces possible axe from T20I squad
Ashwin felt that the selectors were being too harsh on Suryakumar Yadav. He agreed that the Mumbai batter’s recent batting performances have not been good enough, but he also reminded everyone that he had led India to a T20 World Cup title not long ago.
The former all-rounder has noted that if the selectors wanted a new captain, they could have handed the leadership to someone else while still keeping Suryakumar in the squad. He urged the Indian think tank not to be that "ruthless"; the experienced batter deserved a little more patience and a few more opportunities to prove himself before being pushed out of the team.
Ashwin signed off by saying, “I was reading somewhere that this is the ruthless mindset India needs to have. Just like Australia. Let me tell you, in Australia, this doesn't happen. There is solid communication. Suryakumar deserved to be in the team. If he doesn't perform in the next two or three series, then the selectors can tell him that we are looking past you.”
