Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reflected on India's shocking 3-0 Test series whitewash against New Zealand at home, calling it one of the most devastating moments of his career.
New Zealand's dominant performance has left the Indian cricket team and cricket experts stunned, as they became the first-ever team to sweep India at home in a three-match Test series.
Ravichandran Ashwin calls India's 3-0 whitewash by New Zealand "devastating"
The New Zealand cricket team completed the clean sweep with a dominating victory inside three days in the third and final Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Well, Ravichandran Ashwin's frustration is deep, especially with India’s collapse across all departments.

In a heartbreaking revelation, Ashwin noted that India’s batting woes were just embarrassing, but the team’s weaknesses were exposed across the department and venues, particularly as New Zealand spinners unleashed havoc on pitches, where India is typically dominant.
New Zealand’s spin attack put on a show that left India's renowned batting order helpless, outclassing the hosts in all three Test matches, which was not even anticipated in a dream.
It's a very shattering experience: Ashwin
Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Ravichandran Ashwin said that he has no words to react to the embarrassing whitewash, and even he didn't know how to respond to the loss for the last 2-3 days.
Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel: “We have been hit by a 3-0 loss to New Zealand. I read that it has never happened in India in history. I don't know how to react to it. I know that in my career and in my experience in cricket, we don't have so many emotions when we play. But it's a very shattering experience. That's the right word for it. I didn't know how to react or respond to it for the last 2-3 days.”
I am also a big reason for series loss: Ravichandran Ashwin
Reflecting on his own role in the three-match Test series, Ashwin expressed deep disappointment over his lack of contribution with the bat against New Zealand. For Ashwin, failing to support his team in all aspects left a bitter taste, especially when every extra run might have counted.
Recognizing his own shortcomings, the Indian off-spinner took a significant share of the blame for the team’s Test series loss to the Kiwis, admitting that he didn’t deliver as he had hoped, especially when his contributions were truly needed.
Ashwin signed off by saying, “I expect a lot from myself. I am a guy who says I am the reason for everything that went wrong. I am also a big reason and a big part of it (series loss). I couldn't contribute to the lower-order runs. As a bowler, I know that runs are a vital currency for a bowler. I started well in many places, then I threw it away on a couple of occasions. I put my best, but it wasn't enough.”
Notably, India's unexpected whitewash has thrown their World Test Championship Final hopes into jeopardy. To secure a place in the WTC final without depending on other teams' performances, they now face the daunting task of winning four out of the five Tests against Australia.
