Former India National Cricket Team player Wasim Jaffer shared his take on Ravichandran Ashwin having a poor season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He said that the veteran spinner needs to trust his off-spin more against right-handers.
Ravichandran Ashwin has been having a horrible campaign with the ball in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. With him calling his retirement from international cricket, it was expected that he would set the stage on fire in the league and help his team win.
Ravichandran Ashwin has looked extremely torrid with the ball
But that hasn't been the case so far in the league. Ravichandran Ashwin has looked extremely torrid with the ball. The off-spinner hasn't been able to make the kind of impact, and this has been one of the reasons why Chennai Super Kings has struggled big time in the league.
Apart from taking wickets, Ravichandran Ashwin has also struggled to curtail the run flow. As a result of that, he was dropped from the playing XI after just 7 games. He picked 5 wickets, but his economy was something that was not expected from him.
I think so - Wasim Jaffer on R Ashwin being released
Wasim Jaffer pointed out that Ravichandran doesn't trust his off-spin against right-handers, which is a concern, and added that he should be released by CSK. He also said that the off-spinner needs to be attacking rather than defensive. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said:
"I think so (he should be released). I think because Ashwin doesn't bowl off-spin to right-handers at all, that's one of the concerns. He bowls that carrom ball, and I personally, as a batsman, feel it's a lot easier to play. It's a very defensive tactic and that's why probably he's a class act. He needs to trust his off-spin a lot more, I feel."
He hasn't shown that effectiveness - Daren Ganga on Ravichandran Ashwin
Daren Ganga, who was part of the discussion, said that Ravichandran Ashwin hasn't shown that effectiveness and penetration. He explained:
"Yeah, I mean it's a tough one. You're balancing a player with a massive reputation, playing for India and doing so well in red ball cricket. Coming back to his home base, I feel that from a skills point of view, he's got it. I don't know if he's gone too defensive. I mean sometimes they say the older you get in cricket, the smarter you become about your own game and the risks involved.
"So maybe it's something that he has to look at, but surely from the point of view of penetration and effectiveness, he hasn't shown that effectiveness. Expected of him, we felt that that combination with him and Jadeja would prove to be a similar combination we've seen from Chakravarthy and maybe Narine. That hasn't happened."
