Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have completed a player swap deal, according to a report from Cricbuzz. The Royals are set to receive Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, while Sanju Samson will move to the Super Kings ahead of the IPL retention deadline (Saturday, November 15).
All ten IPL franchises must confirm their retention lists by November 15 before the upcoming mini-auction, which is likely to take place in December. Teams can retain as many players as they want. There is no restriction on retentions, but each squad can have a maximum of 25 players, including 8 overseas.
Sanju Samson-Ravindra Jadeja Deal Between CSK and RR Completed
BCCI has confirmed the trade between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, involving Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja, is set to be finalized once all franchises confirm their player retentions ahead of the auction.
The deal initially faced a technical snag because the Rajasthan Royals had no available overseas slot in their squad. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has resolved the issue. An official announcement confirming the Samson–Jadeja trade is expected on Saturday.
"For the record, the trade, which had hit a technical snag due to the lack of an available overseas slot, as first reported by Cricbuzz on November 11, in the Royals' squad, has been cleared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). An official announcement is expected on Saturday (November 15)," the report said.
Once MS Dhoni Is Done, Does the Team Have a Representative Face? - CEO
The report also added that the Chennai Super Kings had been pursuing Sanju Samson for nearly three years. An IPL franchise CEO, speaking anonymously, described the deal as a “sweetheart arrangement” favoring the Rajasthan Royals.
The CEO stated that it’s surprising to see Jadeja released so easily, especially with MS Dhoni nearing retirement. The official also questioned the future identity of the franchise once Dhoni retires.
"It's quite shocking that a franchise player who has been a star performer for CSK has been let go so easily. With MS Dhoni on the verge of retirement, who is the face of CSK? After MS, it was always Ravindra Jadeja. Once MS is done, does the team have a representative face?" the report quoted the CEO as saying.
Ravindra Jadeja in Discussions With MS Dhoni Ahead of Trade Process
The report added that Ravindra Jadeja spoke with MS Dhoni before the trade discussions began. Notably, both players felt that the deal would benefit all parties involved.
"The two have spoken before the trade process was initiated, and both apparently agreed that the move is in the best interest of everyone concerned," the report claimed.
The Super Kings are reportedly preparing for a revamp ahead of the IPL 2026 retention deadline. Multiple reports on Friday claimed that the franchise is likely to release several players, including Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, and Jamie Overton.
