On Thursday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced its annual contract list for the term of October 2020-September 2021. The talking point about the list was the exclusion of Ravindra Jadeja from the Grade A+ category, which is the highest paying bracket.

Three players – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah – were placed in the A+ category while Ravindra Jadeja in the A group. The A+ contract, in which the players make INR 7 crore annually, is reserved for the players who play all three formats.

The all-rounder’s exclusion from the A+ list comes as a surprise considering he is an imperative part of India’s all three formats eleven. Ravindra Jadeja is also in the top 10 ICC all-rounder’s rankings in ODI and Tests.

However, now, according to a report in Cribuzz, it has been revealed that the board pondered over giving a promotion to the elite class to the left-hander. It was a debated topic and eventually, the board retained him in Grade A.

The one reason which seems plausible for this decision is that Ravindra Jadeja hasn’t had much game time in the period of the contract. The contract is for the term from October 2020 to September 2021 and the left-hander has played little cricket in the past five months for India – he got injured during the Test series in Australia and missed all the matches at home against England.

Cannot see any reason why Ravindra Jadeja was not considered for A + Grade: MSK Prasad

Former chief selector, MSK Prasad finds it surprising that the Chennai Super Kings all-rounder is not in the highest-paying bracket. Prasad believes that Ravindra Jadeja deserved the A+ contract.

Prasad, however, predicts that along with Jadeja, Rishabh Pant will be soon promoted in the A+ category as both will be key parts of the Indian team across formats going forward. Pant has also been placed in Grade A after his heroics in Australia and versus England.

“Jadeja is a genuine A+ candidate. Those who play all formats and have good ICC rankings are included in the list. I cannot see any reason why he was not considered for A + Grade.

“I can see Pant in A+ soon. He is not regular now but it will be difficult to ignore him for the grade. Both Jadeja and Pant could be at the top bracket soon,” Prasad told Cricbuzz.

Hardik Pandya has been promoted from Grade B (INR 3 Cr) to Grade A (INR 5 Cr) after his exploits in white-ball cricket while leg-spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were demoted to Grade C. (INR 1 Cr). Youngsters Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, are been handed the Grade C contract; Shardul Thakur is promoted to Grade B.
