With the Asia Cup set to be postponed for the second year in a row, the next couple of years could see the marquee event taking place on a back-to-back basis.

And, according to a report published in ANI, Pakistan has emerged as a front-runner to host the 2022 edition while the 2023 event could take place in Sri Lanka.

Asia Cup was set to take place in June this year following its postponement last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sri Lanka was supposed to host the event but a combination of factors which includes Team India qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship final and a recent surge in Covid cases on the island has meant that the quadrennial event will once again be put on the backburner.

Earlier this year, PCB chief Ehsan Mani has indicated the same.

“Asia Cup was set to go last year but it got postponed to this year. Right now, it looks like Asia Cup won’t be going ahead this year as the WTC finals are set to go ahead in June. Sri Lanka had said that they would try to host the tournament in June,” Ehsan Mani had told reporters in Karachi during a press conference.

“The dates are clashing. We think the tournament would not be going ahead, and we might have to push the tournament to 2023,” he added.

Asia Cup was last staged in the United Arab Emirates in September 2018, which Team India won for the second time in a row and for a record 7th time by beating Bangladesh in a low-scoring final.
