Team India wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel starred with the bat on Day 2 (Friday, October 3) of the first Test against the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The young batter, who replaced the injured Rishabh Pant, reached his maiden century in international cricket in the ongoing match.
Pant, who was appointed as vice-captain ahead of the England series, was ruled out of the West Indies series due to injury. Pant missed the fifth and final Test against England, where Jurel was picked in the playing XI. Jurel retained his place in the squad after Pant failed to recover in time for the home Tests.
Dhruv Jurel Scores His Maide Century in International Cricket
Dhruv Jurel reached his maiden Test century on the second day of the Ahmedabad Test against the West Indies. HeMaiden brought up the milestone with a boundary off Roston Chase on the final delivery of the 116th over in India's first innings.
The 24-year-old came in at No. 5 following the dismissal of Shubman Gill in the morning session. He started cautiously, hitting his first four only on the 38th ball he faced. He formed a steady partnership with Ravindra Jadeja for the fifth wicket after KL Rahul was dismissed shortly after lunch.
Jurel countered the West Indian spinners, who tried to exploit the rough outside the leg stump, defending with patience and precision. He lofted Chase over mid-wicket for two sixes once settled.
Dhruv Jurel Joins MS Dhoni, Farokh Engineer in Elite List of Indian Players
Dhruv Jurel became just the third Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score a hundred at home against the West Indies. He joined MS Dhoni and Farokh Engineer in the elite list. Dhoni had recorded 144 in the 2011 Kolkata Test, while Engineer scored 109 during the 1967 Chennai Test.
This century is Jurel's second 50-plus score across six Tests. The wicketkeeper-batter had played a 90-run knock against England in Ranchi last year. He has now scored over 350 runs across nine innings at an average above 37.
Overall, Jurel has hit his third hundred in First-Class (FC) cricket. He has amassed over 1,800 FC runs at an average of around 49, with 13 scores of fifty or more.
