India National Cricket Team skipper Rohit Sharma has come under massive scanner, and things are not going his way. The premier batter was dropped from the XI for the ongoing fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, underway at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.
Rohit Sharma was dropped from the team amid his poor returns with the bat, and this has raised a lot of speculations about his future across the formats. Now, in a drastic turn of events, the reports in MyKhel have suggested something that would not be good news for the captain.
BCCI has already started exploring leadership options in ODI cricket as well following Rohit Sharma's Test snub in Sydney
As per the reports, it is learned that with Rohit Sharma getting dropped from Tests, BCCI has already started exploring leadership options in ODI cricket as well. The reports added that if his role as a captain in the 50-over format comes under scanner, then he would be relieved of his captaincy duties.
It is learned that Hardik Pandya will be given the leadership role in ODIs. The BCCI sees the all-rounder as the potential candidate to lead India National Cricket Team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 if the current skipper comes under scanner for his leadership.
Hardik has the knack for leading in high-pressure situations, and his experience as an all-rounder and leader makes him an ideal choice - BCCI source
Speaking to MyKhel Now, a BCCI source said: "Hardik has the knack for leading in high-pressure situations, and his experience as an all-rounder and leader makes him an ideal choice for an ICC tournament like the Champions Trophy."
There is no chance that T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav might be taking over the charge in the ODIs as well because of his poor record. There are chances that Shubman Gill, who is the vice-captain of the team, might be considered as well for the role.
Gill needs more grooming to mature into a leader, and SKY's ODI performances haven't been convincing enough - BCCI source
But the BCCI source claimed that Shubman Gill needs time to evolve and also talked about why Suryakumar Yadav couldn't take charge. He added that Hardik Pandya stays the most balanced option to lead India in ODIs. He added:
"Gill needs more grooming to mature into a leader, and SKY's ODI performances haven't been convincing enough. Hardik remains the most balanced option to lead India in ODIs if Rohit is unavailable."
After the Test snub, Rohit Sharma's first assignment in the ODIs will be the series against the England National Cricket Team. After that, the India National Cricket Team will be playing in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and it remains to be seen if he will captain the team or not.
Rohit Sharma recently took India National Cricket Team to the win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and it will be a massive thing if he is replaced as a captain in the ODIs as well.
