Taking a dig at Shakib Al Hasan for his actions against Sri Lanka, ex-India batter Mohammad Kaif has asked the Bangladesh captain to learn leadership from his India counterpart Rohit Sharma.
The World Cup game between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was marred by Angelo Mathews’ controversial dismissal. The former Sri Lanka captain was dismissed even without facing a ball after Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a ‘timed out’ dismissal and the on-field umpire gave his decision in the favour of the bowling team.
The incident happened when Mathews came out to bat in the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. The veteran allrounder had arrived at the batting crease on time and was also ready to face the first ball before the strap of his helmet broke. As he called for a new helmet, Shakib Al Hasan appealed for the ‘timed out’ dismissal and the on-field umpire adjudged the allrounder out.
According to the rules, a new batter must be “ready to receive the ball” within two minutes of a dismissal. With Mathews failing to be ready to face the first ball within time, he became the first player in international cricket to be given time out.
Mohammad Kaif takes a shot at Shakib Al Hasan:
The controversial decision has once again sparked the rules vs spirit of the game debate. Just like the Mankad most dismissal, the timed-out dismissal is also well within the rules of the game but is widely considered against the spirit of the game.
Unsurprisingly, Shakib Al Hasan has been facing the heat for his actions. And Mohammad Kaif has also joined the bandwagon to criticize the Bangladesh ace. Kaif took to X to share one of his old posts in which he had praised Rohit Sharma for withdrawing a run-out appeal against Dasun Shanaka earlier this year.
In the final over of the Guwahati ODI between India and Sri Lanka, Shanaka was batting on 98 when Mohammed Shami broke the stumps at the non-striker’s end after the former walked out of the crease. While Shami appealed for a run-out Rohit eventually withdrew it. Recalling the incident, Kaif wrote: “Shakib should learn from Rohit Sharma”
