Rohit Sharma has openly criticized the current state of cricket commentary and media coverage in India. Rohit Sharma has expressed frustration with how cricket discussions have shifted in recent years.

Rohit Sharma slams Indian cricket commentary

Rohit Sharma stated, “Earlier, I used to see that reporting was done on cricket itself; discussions were about the game. But now I see that it's all about how to get more views, how to make a thousand people read my article. There’s very little genuine conversation about cricket anymore.”

India’s ODI captain further went on to highlight the stark difference in commentary quality between India and other cricketing nations, especially Australia. Rohit said that Indian commentary lacks substance, often focusing on negative aspects and on criticizing players rather than offering insightful and balanced analysis.

'Just disappointing': Rohit Sharma on Indian commentators

He was particularly unhappy with TV commentary. Rohit signed off by saying, “These days, the way commentators speak on TV is just disappointing. When we go to Australia, their commentary is on a whole different level. It’s like night and day. Here, it feels like the goal is just to pick on a player and talk negatively about the player.”

Despite the growing media frenzy, Rohit remains focused on his future in One-Day Internationals, confirming that he will continue playing in the format. The 38-year-old, who scored over 4,300 runs in 67 Test matches, also reflected on his successful leadership journey, including leading India to the 2023 World Test Championship Final.

Rohit Sharma retires from Tests, but aims to play the 2027 ODI World Cup

On Wednesday, May 7, the 38-year-old cricketer bid farewell to Test cricket through an emotional Instagram story. He wrote, “Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honor to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

Rohit's decision comes after a poor home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand and then a horrific tour of Australia, where he crossed 50 just once and averaged 10.93 from 8 Test matches. He had missed the first and last Tests on that tour of Australia.

He had already retired from T20I cricket after guiding India to ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph in June last year in the USA and Caribbean. However, he will continue representing India in ODI cricket, as he is aiming to play in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 in South Africa.

Rohit is currently playing for the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL 2025, where his campaign has also been mixed with over 300 runs in 11 matches so far.
