Rohit Sharma set to return to Ranji Trophy after 9 years
Actually, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has on Monday (January 20) announced the 17-member squad for their next Ranji match against Jammu and Kashmir in Mumbai. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed that Ajinkya Rahane will lead the star-studded Mumbai cricket team in the next round of India’s premier red-ball competition.

The Indian captain Rohit Sharma is all set to play under Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25. It would be Hitman’s first Ranji appearance after nine years. The Indian opener’s last Ranji Trophy appearance was against Uttar Pradesh at the Wankhede Stadium in November 2015.
Well, apart from Rohit, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube, Shardul Thakur and Shreyas Iyer have also been named in Mumbai’s 17-member squad for their next Ranji match against Jammu and Kashmir. However, several well-known faces missed out on the squad.
Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan ignored by the MCA
Prithvi Shaw has yet again dropped by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), while Sarfaraz Khan and his brother Musheer Khan have also failed to make the cut to the 17-member squad for their Ranji clash against Jammu and Kashmir at the MCA Cricket Ground.
The MCA stated in an official media release: “The Senior Selection Committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association, consisting of Mr. Sanjay Patil (Chairman), Mr. Ravi Thaker, Mr. Jeetendra Thackeray, Mr. Kiran Powar, and Mr. Vikrant Yeligeti, has selected the following players to represent Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir to be played from 23rd to 26th January 2025 at the MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, BKC, Mumbai.”

Here's the Mumbai squad for the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Jammu and Kashmir:
Ajinkya Rahane (C), Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ayush Mhatre, Shreyas Iyer, Siddhesh Lad, Shivam Dube, Hardik Tamore (WK), Akash Anand (WK), Tanush Kotian, Shams Mulani, Himanshu Singh, Shardul Thakur, Mohit Awasthi, Sylvester Dsouza, Royston Dias, Karsh Kothari.
Notably, Rohit Sharma has been going through the toughest phase of his career as he scored only 31 runs in five innings in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. Rohit’s Test stats raised doubts over his future in the Indian cricket team.
However, the Indian captain did well in the white-ball cricket in 2024, but his Test numbers are alarming, putting him under immense pressure. Notably, India only featured in three ODIs in 2024, and Rohit amassed 157 runs, while he scored 378 runs in 11 T20Is before retiring in June last year.
But the right-handed batter could manage only 619 runs in 14 Tests in 2024. However, Rohit Sharma would now be hoping to regain his form in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25.
