Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja raised concerns about skipper Rohit Sharma's fitness ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) series against Australia. Ajay Jadeja said that the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team received a wake-up call before the highly anticipated five-match Test series.
Rohit has come under scrutiny after the team's humiliated 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand in the recently concluded Test series at home. The India skipper also failed to make an impact during the series. He scored just 91 runs in six innings at an average of 15.17, with his best score being 52.
We Should Come Back With A Series Win - Ajay Jadeja
Ajay Jadeja backed Rohit Sharma to guide Team India to a series victory against Australia after raising concerns about his fitness. Jadeja said that India would perform well in the upcoming series, even if they don't reach the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final 2025.
“You get a wake-up call, like our team did now. We won the World Cup this year, [you’re] top of the world, you’re the best team and best captain. Rohit Sharma, I feel for him. Suddenly he is fat, he does not move well."
“I think we’ll do well. We may not do as well as to make it to the World Test Championship final but I feel we should come back with a series win. We are a better side,” Jadeja said during the Sportstar Sports Conclave.
India must win the upcoming series against Australia 4-0 to secure a spot in the World Test Championship final without relying on other results in the ongoing cycle.
India Went There Once In Eight Years - Ajay Jadeja
Ajay Jadeja also spoke about India's dominance in Australia like no other team in history. The former batter pointed out that India toured Australia not regularly in the past, but now players are better prepared for conditions with multiple tours.
“Our cricket has changed, earlier India went there once in eight years so there were just one or two players who had played there. Now you have multiple tours, so they are well-equipped. When you have nothing to lose, you will be dangerous,” the 53-year-old said.
Rohit Sharma's India To Take On Australia In Perth
Rohit Sharma has not performed up to expectations in Test matches on Australian soil, with no Test centuries to his name. The batter has scored 408 runs in seven Tests at an average of 31.38, including three half-centuries. He scored just 129 runs across four innings during the last tour of Australia.
The first Test of the series will take place at Perth Stadium on November 22. India has announced their 18-man squad for the five-match series. Veteran pace bowler Mohammed Shami was not included in the squad. Notably, Rohit's participation in the first Test is uncertain due to personal reasons.
