Rohit Sharma pulled off a brilliant diving catch at the second slip to send birthday boy Dawid Malan back to the pavilion on Day 2 of the Oval Test. Malan looked comfortable at the crease until then but perished when England needed him the most.
Day 2 began with India in search of quick wickets. Nightwatchman Craig Overton was sent back very early, nicking one ball off of Umesh Yadav in the second over of the day. Ollie Pope then joined Malan as they played out a few overs without much fuss.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli kept persisting with Umesh and it paid dividends. After planting some doubts in Malan’s mind, Umesh bowled a length delivery that was angled in before moving away from the left-hander very late. Malan failed to account for the movement and only managed an edge.
Rohit Sharma, standing at second slip, flung himself low towards his right and held on to complete a stunning catch. The ball was traveling at the rate of knots but Rohit grabbed it comfortably. It sparked off huge celebrations in the Indian camp.

India right on top early in the first session on Day 2
Going into Day 2, India had the momentum on their back having dismissed in-form Joe Root very late last evening. Overnight batsmen Malan and Overton had the responsibility to safeguard the team against a possible collapse.
However, they failed quite miserably. Overton fell chasing a wide delivery from Umesh without adding a run to his tally. Malan soon followed leaving England reeling at 62/5, still trailing India by 131 runs in the first innings.
Umesh, who was brought into the team in the place of Mohammad Shami, justified his selection with three crucial wickets, including the all-important wicket of Root.
