Former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton issued a warning to the Rohit Sharma-led team ahead of the second semifinal match in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton said that India could face a repeat of their defeat during the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal.
The Rohit Sharma-led team will face defending champions England in the semifinal match at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. India defeated Australia in their final Super Eight game on Monday. The Men in Blue aim to maintain their undefeated streak in the knockout matches of the event.
England, on the other hand, lost two matches before advancing to the semifinals of the ICC tournament. The England team has won two T20 World Cup titles. They won their first-ever T20 World Cup during the 2010 edition. They beat Pakistan in the final match during the last edition of the T20 World Cup.
Going To Go With South Africa And England - Nasser Hussain
Nasser Hussain predicted South Africa to continue their winning streak in the ongoing tournament. Hussain added that England will face India in the other semifinal with memories of their win in Adelaide. He said that England may not fear India unless the pitch conditions heavily favor India's style of play.
“I'm going to go with South Africa and England. It is just that England will go in with the memory of that semifinal in Adelaide. As I said, this is a repeat. And I don't think this England side fear India, unless it is a very dry slow pitch. The only thing I will say about this England batting line-up, and I know Buttler and Salt just whacked the USA when it is just holding a little bit, and the pitch is a bit slow, their batting looks vulnerable and that would play massively in India's hand. when it is just holding a little bit, and the pitch is a bit slow, their batting looks vulnerable,” Hussain said.
India and England have faced each other six times in T20 World Cup encounters. The Men in Blue boast a 4-2 record against England in ICC tournaments in the T20 format. They have met only once in the semifinals of T20 World Cups, where England secured a dominant 10-wicket victory over India in 2022.
South Africa versus England Final - Michael Atherton
Michael Atherton agreed with Nasser Hussain's prediction, stating that he also believes England will defeat India in Guyana. Atherton predicted a final match between South Africa and England in the ongoing T20 World Cup.
“Nasser thinks India are not good enough. And I think England are going to beat India in Guyana and South Africa will be too good for Afghanistan so it will be a South Africa versus England final,” Atherton said.
England were on the verge of elimination in the group stage when their match against Scotland was washed out. They later relied on Australia's results to advance to the Super Eight stage. They secured victories against the West Indies and the USA to qualify for the semifinals.
