India skipper Rohit Sharma has revealed that he’s been working hard on reverse-sweep shots as he gears up for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The batting star made the revelation after starring with the bat in the third IND vs AFG T20I at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday (January 17).
After failing to open his account in the first two games of the three-match series, the veteran opener bounced back in style by smashing a record fifth T20I century. He played an unbeaten knock of 121 runs before starring with the bat in two super overs as well as India registered a thrilling victory.
Batting first, India were reeling at 22 for 4 before an unbeaten 190-run knock between Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh helped them finish on 212 runs. Rinku remained unbeaten on 69 runs off 39 balls.
After both the teams finished on 212, Rohit Sharma smashed two sixes in the first super over as both the teams once again ended up with the same score – 16. In the second super over, his six and four helped India score 11 before Ravi Bishnoi picked up 2 wickets for just 1 run to clinch a thrilling win for the Men in Blue.
Rohit Sharma working hard on reverse-sweep:
One of the striking features of Rohit Sharma’s knock during the third T20I against Afghanistan was reverse-sweep shots. One of the best openers of his generation, Rohit is hardly seen playing any unorthodox shot. However, the India captain attempted the reverse sweep on several occasions during the third T20I. Speaking after the game, Rohit said he’s been practicing the reverse sweep for the last two years.
“I’ve been practicing that shot a lot. You have to play these shots if you want to put pressure on the bowler when the ball is spinning and you can’t hit straight. That’s when you have to try something different. I’ve been practicing the sweep and reverse sweep for the last two years,” Rohit told JioCinema.
“I played the shot a couple of times in Test cricket. You should have options and it’s up to you how to use those options. The ball was spinning and gripping, so I thought it would be better to play with the spin rather than hitting it straight,” Rohit added.
With the T20I series done and dusted, Rohit & Co. will now turn their focus on the highly-anticipated five-match Test series against England. The series is scheduled to get underway on January 25 in Hyderabad.
