Rohit Sharma's future remains in jeopardy, as multiple reports suggest that the upcoming ODI match on Sunday will be his final match for India. Interestingly, a few other reports, also from reliable sources, suggested that the opener still has the opportunity to stay with the Indian National Cricket Team.

Two contrasting suggestions on Rohit Sharma's future are keeping the cricket fans in a guessing game. More than Sunday's match, it is Rohit Sharma's possible retirement that remains in the headlines.

Speculations around Rohit Sharma's future are still alive

From the morning hours of July 17 to July 18, it has been more than 24 hours since speculations around Rohit Sharma's future with the Indian cricket team have been doing the rounds across social media platforms.

While some media reports confirmed that the India vs England 3rd ODI is going to be the batter's last ever match in the Indian colours, the contrasting reports, which were published later, hinted that as Rohit Sharma wants to play the 2027 ODI World Cup, the decision whether to retire or not is completely in his hands.

If the recently published reports are to be believed, then the upcoming ODI at Lord's may not be his final match for the Indian cricket team.

Two different reports appeared within 24 hours

According to a Cricbuzz report, one section says that Rohit is in no mood to hang up his boots and continue playing for the team. Another section has different opinions, which claim that due to selectors and the head coach Gautam Gambhir's attitude, the former India captain could think about retirement, as younger openers like Yashasvi Jaiswal are in line.

With two different versions of claims, it is hard to imagine what exactly is going on behind the curtains. Both of the claims are made on their own grounds. Indeed, the recent form of Rohit is not enough to justify his legacy: 241 runs in eight innings at an average of 30.12 and a strike rate of 88.60, with only one half-century.

In the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, the selectors and the team management will definitely try to set a squad with the players in form. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 230 runs in just 3 games, has emerged as a contender who could replace Rohit in the format. There is another possibility: both Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal are in the same squad.

Should the selectors snub Rohit Sharma for Yashasvi Jaiswal?

Based on form, selectors could include Yashasvi Jaiswal to open the innings with Shubman Gill and Jaiswal in the team as a third opener. In the worst case, if the coach and selectors feel that, by any means, the former skipper is not fit for the team, then Rohit's international career could be in trouble.

In this situation, only the cricketer himself, the top brass of the team management, and the BCCI officials are the best who can tell the exact story behind the scenes. In the meantime, if any official statement appears addressing the topic, then it will put every speculation to a halt.
