The days of Rohit Sharma as the Test captain of the India National Cricket Team are over. As per the reports in PTI, it is learned that not only as a captain, but his days as a player in the longest format of the game for the team are over as well.

The decision was made during the BCCI’s review meeting on Saturday which was attended by BCCI officials, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and captain Rohit Sharma. Although it is yet to be made public the selectors have moved forward from the opening batter and are now looking at the future roadmap.

Rohit Sharma is very unlikely to be part of the Indian team for the England Test series

Rohit is very unlikely to be part of the Indian team for the England Test series, which will be played later this. It is learned that Jasprit Bumrah is all set to captain the team during the tour and will certainly lead the team in the first Test at Headingley if all goes well.

Rohit came under the scanner after his poor performances as a captain as well as a batter since the last two Test series. Under his leadership, the India National Cricket Team faced a 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand, a thing that happened for the first time in Indian cricket.

Rohit Sharma having a poor time as a leader and batter

Following that, India faced a thrashing 3-1 loss under his leadership in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and failed to qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship. Also, as a batter, he looked extremely torrid as in the 8 games he scored just around 160 runs.

There were even reports that Rohit Sharma had planned to announce retirement from Tests after the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. But some well-wishers convinced him not to retire, and hence, instead of retiring, he considered dropping himself.

However, Rohit Sharma himself mentioned that he is not going anywhere. But with reports claiming that his days are over, it is very unlikely that he will be back in the team. He also doesn't have runs to support his case, and hence, things don't look great for him at all.

For me, it is a very simple thing. You look at the data and find who is a sure-shot pick in Test cricket - Devang Gandhi on next Indian captain

Former national selector Devang Gandhi talked about the next captain after Rohit Sharma. He said that the leadership role should be given to those who are sure-shot picks in Test cricket. He highlighted Rishabh Pant's contributions to the team and backed him to be the vice-captain. Speaking to PTI, he said:

"For me, it is a very simple thing. You look at the data and find who is a sure-shot pick in Test cricket. Bumrah has played 45 Tests and Pant has 43 Tests. He (Pant) is 27 now and by the time he was only 23, he had singlehandedly won India one of its greatest Tests at the Gabba. He is a match-winner, a good sounding board for bowlers and should be the vice-captain."
