Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody feels that the young pace attack of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has flourished under the guidance of MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He lauded the trio of Akash Singh, Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande for their performances.

Chennai Super Kings are having a staggering campaign in the IPL 2023. They are placed on the top of the points table with 5 wins to their name. One of the main reasons behind their staggering performances this season has been their young bowling attack.

The way skipper MS Dhoni has handled his bowlers has been impressive. Akash Singh chips in with the wickets in the powerplay, Tushar Deshpande steps up in the middle overs whereas Matheesha Pathirana has delivered goods in the death overs.

The trio is consistently taking wickets for the team and is putting them in dominating positions. With the kind of confidence Dhoni has shown in them, it’s fair to say that in the coming years, they will be big superstars.

Tom Moody lauded the trio for chipping in wickets at the crucial wickets and said that they have settled into their roles under the guidance of MS Dhoni. Speaking in an interaction on ESPNCricinfo, he said:

“Akash Singh has been really impressive. He’s been like a hole up into the. He has been impressive and has swung the ball early, there’s a little bit of movement early for him and there’s only a narrow window when the ball does swing. It’s interesting how Chennai seem to find these bowlers but not only find them as we mentioned before under the guidance of Dhoni, they seem to flourish and settle in their roles.

“Pathirana bowled again well and we gonna recognise that this kid is only 20 years old. He’s delivering those key overs for MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings at the death, under pressure, he constantly learning.

“In a way, MS Dhoni is doing a favour to Sri Lanka cricket by fast-tracking one of their emerging talents. You can’t ignore Tushar Deshpande as well, he picked another couple of wickets tonight and he’s quietly going up about his business and climbing up that leaderboard when it comes to wicket takers for the tournament.”

RR vs CSK: “These guys are doing their jobs,” says Wasim Jaffer

Wasim Jaffer, who was also present at the discussion, also was impressed by the young pace attack of Chennai Super Kings. He pointed out how all three have chipped in at crucial junctures.

He said: “Tushar Deshpande has improved quite a lot from the time he has played for DC and now getting continuous game time. His variations have improved and taken some important wickets.

“Akash Singh has been a really good replacement for Mukesh Choudhary who was like to like left-arm seamer who did so well last year and is bowling well. Any left armer who bowls at the descent pace can swing the ball into the right-hander gonna always pose threat and he is one of the guys who has played for India under-19.

“You know he has a bit of first-class cricket behind him and he knows what he is doing and Pathirana. You know the kind of swingy action and it’s difficult to hit him, even though he is so readable in the way he delivers the kind of variation he has it’s not easy to get on top of it.

“We do say that Chennai has a relatively not-so-great bowling line up but these guys are doing their jobs, they always relied on the spin which is always their strength so no wonder along.”

The MS Dhoni-led side will now take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their next game on Thursday (27th April).
