Shreyas Iyer has scripted history by becoming the first-ever captain to lead Kolkata Knight Riders to a top-of-the-table finish in the history of the Indian Premier League. The two-time IPL champions will finish at the top of the points table irrespective of the result in their last league game of the ongoing IPL 2024.

KKR's top-place finish was confirmed after Rajasthan Royals suffered a defeat against Punjab Kings on Wednesday (May 15). KKR are currently at the top of the points table with 19 points from 13 games. RR, on the other hand, are at the second spot with 16 points from 16 points.

With KKR and RR to face each other in their last league game, even if the latter wins the game, they will finish the league stage on 18 points, one point less than the Shreyas Iyer-led side's tally. KKR had never managed to finish at the top of the points table even though they have won the title twice.

Shreyas Iyer's historic feat:

From 2008 to 2010, KKR could not make it to the playoffs before finally doing it in 2011 by finishing fourth. In 2012, Gautam Gambhir led KKR to their IPL title although they finished in the second spot in the points table. In 2013, KKR finished seventh before winning the title again in 2014 after finishing in the second spot in the points table.

From 2015 to 2023, they could not finish above the third spot in the points table before finally ending their long wait for a top-place finish this year. Under Shreyas Iyer, KKR have looked unstoppable this season and will be looking to go all the way this year.

KKK's league position in every season:

KKR have also sealed their place in the qualifier one which means they will be getting two shots at the final. If they win the first qualifier, they will qualify for the final. In case, they suffer a loss, they will get another chance and will play against the winner of the Eliminator.
