Indian opener Ruturaj Gaikwad was run out for a diamond duck in the first T20I against Australia in Visakhapatnam on Thursday, November 23. He was run-out unfortunately without even facing a ball in the match.
A terrible mix-up between Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the very first over cost the right-hander his wicket. In the penultimate ball of the first over, Jaiswal chipped a shot just over the 30-yard circle and was involved in a terrible mix-up while attempting the second run. After initially willing to go for the second runs, Jaiswal pulled out and sold Gaikwad down the river from where he had no chance to get back.
In the process, Gaikwad became the third Indian batter to be dismissed for a golden duck. Amit Mishra and Jasprit Bumrah were the other batters dismissed in the same way. Back on February 9, 2016, Bumrah got out for a diamond duck against Sri Lanka at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
in January 2017, Mishra got out against England at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur. Overall, 21 Indian batters have got out for diamond ducks in Indian cricket.
Ruturaj Gaikwad Gets To An Elite List Of Batters
Bishan Singh Bedi, Roger Binny, Anshuman Gaekwad, Chetan Sharma, Venkatpathy Raju, Javagal Srinath, Abey Kuruvilla, Rajesh Chauhan, Navjot Singh Sidhu, MSK Prasad, Harbhajan Singh, Rahul Dravid, Sreesanth, Zaheer Khan, Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav are the other batters to be dismissed for a diamond duck apart from Gaikwad, Bumrah and Mishra.
“Very happy with the way the boys played. Was very happy with their energy, we were put under pressure but the way everyone showed up was amazing. It’s a proud moment, very proud moment, every time you play, you think about representing India but coming out here and captaining India is a big moment. Thought there will be a little bit of dew but there wasn’t. It isn’t a big ground and I knew batting will get easy” said Suryakumar Yadav after the first T20I win.
Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad will look to make up for his dismissal when India takes on Australia in the second T20I in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, November 26.
