South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje will miss the remaining two matches of the ongoing five-match ODI series against Australia due to a lower back injury. Anrich Nortje’s injury-related absence is a setback for the team as they aim to register the series victory.

Anrich Nortje last played for South Africa in the second ODI, where the Proteas suffered a 123-run loss at Bloemfontein. The right-arm pacer bowled just five overs and conceded 58 runs during the match. He didn’t complete his bowling quota as he walked off the field.

The 29-year-old came to bat at No. 10 in the run chase and scored 10 runs off 13 deliveries. Nortje underwent scans in Johannesburg on Monday and missed the third ODI. Cricket South Africa (CSA) ruled him out of the remaining matches in the series after reviewing the scan results.

Anrich Nortje Ruled Out Of Last Two ODIs

The CSA released an official statement on the X (formerly known as Twitter) handle to provide an injury update on Anrich Nortje and skipper Temba Bavuma. The board confirmed Nortje will miss the remaining two games, while Bavuma will miss the fourth ODI.

“Fast bowler Anrich Nortje (lower back injury) is ruled out of the remaining 2 matches of the #Betway ODI series against Australia ODI captain Temba Bavuma (adductor strain) is unavailable for the 4th ODI Aiden Markram will lead the side,” wrote the caption.

Anrich Nortje Named In South Africa’s World Cup Squad

Anrich Nortje was named CSA’s Player of the Year in July following his impressive bowling performances. The pacer also secured a place in South Africa’s 15-member provisional squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, which is set to be played between October 5 and November 19.

South Africa will be hoping for the speedy recovery of the tearaway fast bowler, considering that the World Cup is just a few weeks away. He has experience playing in Indian conditions, having represented the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the last four editions.

South Africa World Cup Squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Sisanda Magala, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen
