England will take on South Africa in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) of the three-match series at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Wednesday, February 1. All-rounder Sam Curran was fined 15 percent of his match fee and handed a demerit point for “excessively celebrating” after dismissing Temba Bavuma in the second ODI on Sunday, January 29.

The International Cricket Council announced the fine on Sam Curran for breaching the code of conduct on Tuesday. Temba Bavuma scored 109 runs off 102 balls and helped the team chase down the mammoth target. The hosts took an unassailable 2-0 lead and clinched the series with a game to spare. The left-arm pacer celebrated in the direction of Temba Bavuma after dismissing the South Africa skipper in the 28th over.

Sam Curran was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC’s code of conduct. There was no need for a formal hearing as Curran admitted committing the offense. The accusation was made by the on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Adrian Holdstock, as well as the third and fourth umpires, Bongani Jele and Allahudien Paleker. Following an umpire’s report, match referee Jeff Crowe of New Zealand fined Curran.

It was Curran’s first offense, and if he accumulates four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, he faces a ban. According to the ICC, Curran was found to have committed a level one offence of the ICC code of conduct when he “excessively celebrated towards and in close proximity to the dismissed batter, being an action which had the potential to provoke an aggressive reaction from Bavuma”.

Sam Curran looked decent with the ball, registering figures of 1-60 from his 10 overs. The all-rounder was the second-most economical bowler in the high-scoring match where South Africa chased down the target with five balls to spare.
