The death of former Australian spin legend Shane Warne has taken the entire cricketing fraternity by surprise. He lost his life while being on a vacation in Thailand on March 4. His family said that Warne complained of having issues with his chest before he left for the vacation. After the police investigation, his body has finally been flown to Melbourne where the last rites will be performed.
Several former cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar are yet to over this huge loss to the cricket world. He was friends with all of them with Sachin being one of his very close friends. They had duels in India, Australia and Sharjah. Sachin scored plenty against Warne at Sharjah in 1998. Australia then came to India in 1998 and 2001 with the leg spinner being a part of both those tours. He had epic face-offs with Tendulkar with the Indian cricket fans enjoying the rivetting Sachin vs Warne rivalry.
Meanwhile, former Indian cricket and Mumbai coach, Balwaider Singh Sandu, someone who saw Sachin Tendulkar from close quarters said that Warne was the only bowler who troubled the Little Master. He further spoke about the mindset with which Sachin played Warne. Tendulkar’s Mumbai XI took on Australia as he scored a double-century and led his team to a 10-wicket win.
Sachin Tendulkar Did Not Fear Shane Warne’s Reputation: Balwinder Singh Sandhu

“Sachin had a specific plan in mind and he told all the players to attack Warne. On the Indian wickets, Warne was the only Aussie bowler, who could trouble our batsmen. So, instead of being defensive against him, Sachin advised the boys to be positive and to ensure that they were not done in by Warne’s reputation. I believe the manner in which Mumbai’s First-Class players defeated Australia in two-and-half days gave a lot of confidence to the Indian batsmen thereafter,” Balvinder Singh Sandhu, former Mumbai coach and India pacer, told Mid-Day.
As it turned out, Tendulkar scored 446 runs in that 1998 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home while Warne picked just 10 wickets. The series remains one of the best-ever played in Test cricket, especially for the Sachin vs Warne battle.
“The plan to attack Warne worked well as it not only benefited the Mumbai team but also the Indian team. The message for Team India’s senior batsmen was clear that if you attack Warne, you can prevent him from dominating you. It’s definitely one of the reasons Team India dominated the Test series,” Sandhu further added saying how Sachin planned to play against Warne.
