England’s limited-overs captain, Eoin Morgan reflects on the time he spent with former Australia leg-spinner, Shane Warne, as ‘unbelievable’ and ‘amazing’. He says that the legendary spinner’s ideas are ‘advanced ‘ despite not playing cricket for a long time, and has an astute cricket brain.
Shane Warne is the coach of the London Spirit side, for which Eoin Morgan is the captain, for The Hundred this year. The team also includes other marquee players such as Glenn Maxwell, Mohammad Nabi, and Mohammad Amir.
Eoin Morgan had interacted with Warne last year ahead of the draft for the tournament, which got postponed due to the pandemic. The English skipper was left impressed by Warne and says that it will be ‘huge’ for players to work alongside the spin-bowling maestro this year.
“Warne has been unbelievable to work with! I think one of the things… meeting Shane, and having done the preparation that we did a year and a half ago for the first draft and then for the second draft, just speaking cricket with him has been amazing.
“His cricket brain is probably the best I have ever come across. His ideas about the game are always on point. They might not be traditional, in a way that they are thought out but his ideas about the game are as advanced as I have ever heard,” Eoin Morgan told Sky Sports.
“So I think it’s going to be an incredible experience working with him and I think for every player that gets to play at the Spirit this year, it’s going to be huge because they’ll see one of the greatest bowlers of all time dishing out all this experience on point about the current game even though he hasn’t played in maybe 20 years is incredible,” Eoin Morgan added.
We have really strong chances this year: Eoin Morgan
Speaking of the IPL 2021, Eoin Morgan will continue to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders, after taking over from Dinesh Karthik mid-season last year. He believes that his side has a good chance to win the third title for KKR, after missing out on the playoffs due to the net run rate last season.
KKR has acquired the services of Shakib Al Hasan and Harbhajan Singh this year, while the left-hander is happy to have players – Andre Russell and Sunil Narine in particular – fit at the start of the season.
“We have really strong chances this year. Having gone through the experience last year, my first year as captain, Brendon McCullum’s first year as coach. Learning more and more about the players who would benefit us in a huge amount this year. We are in a really strong position, we have guys fully fit at the moment and when you look down the line, particularly on paper, it (our team) looks pretty strong,” Eoin Morgan concluded.
