Shardul Thakur's Middle Name Should Be Self Confidence: Former CSK Bowling Consultant Eric Simons

Former Chennai Super Kings bowling consultant Eric Simons feels that Shardul Thakur is one of the most confident players he has worked with. Simons, who was also India’s bowling consultant earlier, also said that Shardul Thakur is also honest in terms of his own performances.

Shardul Thakur was part of Chennai Super Kings for the last few IPL seasons. The right-arm pacer was released by CSK ahead of IPL 2022 auction. Eric Simmons worked with CSK’s bowling department during Thakur’s tenure in the team and hence also worked with him. Currently, Thakur is also a prominent medium pacer for India in the national squad, with his bonus ability to smash big shots with the bat.

Shardul Thakur’s Middle Name Should Be Self Confidence: Eric Simmons

While speaking to News18 in an interview, Eric Simons called Shardul Thakur to be an interesting player. The former South African player also feels Thakur’s middle name should be self-confidence.

“Shardul Thakur is a very interesting character. His middle name should be self-confidence. He’s one of the most confident and honest cricketers I’ve ever worked with. He’s honest in terms of his own performance, what he thinks he has done and what he hasn’t done. Players feed off his self-belief. They sense that”, Eric Simons said.

Simons also revealed how Shardul Thakur improved his batting after getting out on a match-deciding delivery in IPL 2019 final. Thakur got out by LBW on Lasith Malinga’s ball in CSK vs MI IPL 2019 final, when his team CSK needed 2 runs on the final ball.

“I was involved in the IPL final against Mumbai when he (Thakur) got that lbw. He was devastated. An incident like that either takes you into a deep hole or you say I’m never going to let that happen to me again. And look what he’s done.

“He becomes a decent batsman, gets the fastest fifty in England, and a fifty in Australia. That tough moment in his life drove him to be better, it didn’t drive him into a hole. That sums up who Shardul Thakur is”, Simons said.

Shardul Thakur cemented his place in the playing XI after justifying his batting and bowling ability to the national selectors. He slammed a half-century in a Test during the Australia tour last year and two half-centuries in Tests during the England tour.

He also has the wicket-taking ability with his medium-pace attack. Recently in the IND vs SA 2nd Test, the right-arm medium pacer scalped a 7-wicket haul in an innings, while also scoring a quick cameo of 28 with the bat.
